Does anyone here sail on the Chesapeake? |
|
I am looking to go in with my nephew on something like a Catalina 34 and am looking for feedback.

1. I sail on the west coast, but I would love to learn more about east coast sailing. |

Looks like there aren't too many sailors on the site. Too bad!

2. Yea I know. Looks for now that we have settled on a Catalina 34. |
|
It seems to fit all our current needs and I don't expect to be running offshore anytime soon. The boat will be docked in the middle section of the Chesapeake bay so I hope to get some nice sailing in next year. Pretty close to Annapolis and Baltimore Harbor. We have been looking at a few boats and hopefully we can make a deal on the pricing otherwise back to the hunting. I'll let you know what it's like.

3. I think the Cat34 should suit you well. Big enough to be comfortable and small |
|
enough to handle easily.
We are (unfortunately) the owner of two boats, one of which is for sale., but it's in Los Angeles. Hope your deal comes through.

4. The Cat 34 fits what we are looking for. |
|
Eighties or newer, under 40K, fore and aft cabins, and sails reasonably well. I lean more toward cutters like my old boat but my nephew/partner wants faster and better pointing so I won't argue the point. What are you trying to sell?

5. He is "trying" to sell a 34 foot Yorktown. |
|
I say "trying", because he has high emotional attachment to this boat and is not really putting much (if any) effort into it at all. This boat has a large v-berth forward and a small pilot berth aft. It sails extremely well and he lived on it for years, but it was just too small for full time liveaboard for the two of us. Plus he had every nook and cranny stuffed and there was no room for anything of mine.
I have never sailed on the East Coast, but it looks like there are a lot of wonderful options all along the coast. I think the Chesapeake is similar to the Sacramento Delta area out of San Francisco, which we plan to explore next year.

7. Update. Got the boat. 1987 Catalina 34. |
|
The boat is on Long Island and we will keep her there until the spring. The plan is to take some shake down cruises around the Sound and to Block island then sail her offshore down to the Chesapeake.

10. My husband had a 1989 Catalina 34 for 8 years, so if you have any questions, |
|
I would be glad to pass them to him.

The boat is in good shape when you get past the dirt and messiness. The guy was asking 28K which was below value (in our neck of the woods) but very few lookers because it didn't present well. The guy even said that the broker told him to clean it up but he said that was why he was getting rid of the boat...he didn't want to be bothered. Crazy. The surveyor said that there were no major issues and my nephew offer him 25K. He took it. We will sail it down to the Chesapeake in the spring. That same boat on the Chesapeake is selling for 35K plus.
