Kerry positions self as Kennedy's political heir

By STEVE LEBLANC (AP) – 11 hours ago

BOSTON — Sen. John Kerry is positioning himself as the political heir to Edward Kennedy, pledging to thousands of people attending his town hall meeting in Massachusetts that he would fight for the health care overhaul championed by his colleague.

...

Kerry invoked the memory of Kennedy, saying he would follow his example of fighting hard for his principles and seeking political compromises that serve national interest.

Where does he say he is Kennedy's political heir? You know, this is why people don't like Kerry. The headline is a total turnoff. And the fact that it is an absolute falsehood will be lost on most people.

1. AP has it in for him.
This is the second questionable headline for Sen. Kerry this week. The one from Sunday's show was also deceptive and had little to do with the truth.

3. Let's hope they got a lot of complaints!
I was there last night but had to pack and get ready to fly to CA today so haven't been able to write much. But I can tell you that JK when asked specifically about "picking up Teddy's mantle" SPECIFICALLY said that he was still raw from the loss of his friend and that he was going to fight but he wasn't "picking anything up" -- not his exact words, but he refuted that frame quite clearly.

Our amazing videographer, Noisy Democrat, couldn't be there, but I have gotten a promise from Somerville City Hall that they will send me a dvd of their filmed footage in CA! As soon as I get it, I'll do my best to rip it and put it up at John Kerry Media Resource so everyone can see it.

5. I wasn't turned off by the headline, but it is a misrepresentation of what he said.
And, I can see how it could be taken by others looking to nail Kerry for being ambitious. There was also a mention of Kerry being Kennedy's heir simply because he is now the Senior Senator which was from a video made on a local Boston News Station. Unfortunately, I can no long find that video.

8. AP has been ruined by its new head
(Ron Fournier? I forget. . )
It's changed from a fact-based news organization to a shamelessly biased, right-leaning operation. Gross.

10. AP headline writer lied, based on what was actually said
http://www.boston.com/yourtown/somerville/articles/2009/09/04/kerry_poised_to_take_greater_role_in_health_care_debate/">Kerry readies for greater health care role
His influence could be key in Senate debate

SOMERVILLE - Senator John F. Kerry is reluctant to say he will take up Edward M. Kennedy’s mantle on health care - it sounds “presumptuous’’ to him - but he appears primed to take on a larger, more public role in the debate.

Kerry is in a potentially influential position as a member of the Senate Finance Committee, which has been working for months to create a bipartisan health care bill and will be a key battleground when Congress reconvenes next week.

While health care has never been his signature issue, Kerry has been a quiet player in the talks, suggesting ideas for compromise on financing and the public insurance option - ideas the “Gang of Six’’ Finance panel negotiators immediately took up as serious proposals.

Now, he seems poised to do more.

Kennedy’s death left Democrats without their chief advocate of health care overhaul, left the Senate without its best bipartisan dealmaker, and left one of Massachusetts’ most important industries without its leading voice in Washington.

At a town hall meeting in Somerville Wednesday night, Kerry told a Cambridge woman who asked whether he would try to take up Kennedy’s health care mantle that he was still “too raw from the loss’’ and that aiming to fill Kennedy’s shoes would be “presumptuous to say the least.’’

AP headline writers don't factcheck or even bother to present a reflection of reality anymore. Sad.
