JK on with Couric tonight? Help me figure this out?
Found this: http://www.politico.com/click/stories/0910/couric_to_sit_with_kerry_mccain_.html

Monday night, CBS kicks off “Afghanistan: The Road Ahead,” a three-day series that will consume more than half of each night’s evening newscast.

“A ton of elbow grease and resources have gone into this,” anchor Katie Couric said of the network’s ambitious project, which also runs on “The Early Show,” CBS Radio News and CBSNews.com.

Couric says that although Tuesday marks the eight-year anniversary of the U.S. military presence in Afghanistan, the media’s coverage of the war has been inconsistent, largely overshadowed by the war in Iraq. Now the network has “an opportunity to provide a real public service” when it comes to the pivotal issues of counterinsurgency strategy and troop strength in the region.

*snip*

Couric traveled to Afghanistan with Defense Secretary Robert Gates in May for a profile on “60 Minutes.” There, flying over poppy fields and meeting with soldiers, she said, offered more perspective on the difficulties for the military and in building infrastructure for the Afghan people. “How in God’s name will they be able to accomplish this?” she said.

Of course, there are no easy answers. So this week, Couric will sit down with Sens. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.), and as they were in last year’s Presidential Questions series, they’ll be asked the same questions, with their responses running side by side.

Can you tell from this article WHEN this might be on? Our local CBS has the Evening News running from only 6:30-7, does that seem like when they might show it? Help!

The national news is only on a half hour so I assume it will be at 6:30. Not quite sure when they will have JK on, but will definitely watch.

Here is a http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/10/02/eveningnews/main5359865.shtml?tag=contentBody;cbsCarousel">link to CBS but it does not mention JK or McCain that I can see. I guess we'll just have to check it out.

4. That is somewhat ambiguous
Does this mean that they will be asked the same questions they were asked a year ago - and the responses compared. If so, thst is ridiculous as the depth of the lack of credibility of the government was not known then. Kerry actually has been pretty consistently pro counter terrorism - even in 2004, but he did speak of more effort being needed in Afghanistan. (That did not mean 20,000 plus 40,000 more and a shift to counter insurgency.)

6. I think they mean
the format. JK was so much better then McCain, JK was strong with his answers. McCain to me seemed very weak in his answers. They will continue the questioning tomorrow night. I hope they have video up soon.

8. I agree. Senator Kerry was much stronger. But, it surprised me that McCain

waffled on whether Iraq was a good idea. I wanted to see how much of the GOP line he would tow because I had heard he is trying to build his future in the party. I don't think that answer will get him there though.

12. I think Kerry was stronger and more consistent as well, but the difference in the answer
Edited on Tue Oct-06-09 07:57 AM by karynnj
to the question on limits to US power was to me the most interesting. Although McCain says first that there are limits - he then retreats from what was a bold response for an American, especially a Republican American to then say that we will succeed if we follow McChrystal's plan. Kerry, on the other hand, makes a very bold statement that says the US can ONLY succeed if we work with others. I wish there were a follow up question for McCain here asking about this inconsistency.

Both Kerry and McCain have the status and the position to speak hard truths and as statesmen, they should. Saying that the US can not (in essence) control the world, though obvious to most of us, is contrary to elements of our popular culture. It also leads naturally to increased importance for diplomacy and as some brave and wise person said in 2004, the belief that even the US needs friends in the world.

On the history, McCain basically agreed with what Kerry has said since 2002 - that Afghanistan was being hurt by the diversion to Iraq. He then is oddly inconsistent on the need for Iraq - first saying that winning Iraq was necessary to keeping Afghanistan from failing (which Couric should have followed up on - as there is no obvious connection) - then hedging and saying "rightly or wrongly" in the last question.

The McCain inconsistencies likely will not be spelled out by the media, which ignored many very weak McCain answers in 2007 and 2008. What is remarkable to me in the decline in McCain's performance from the 2007 This week Kerry/McCain joint appearance around the time that Petraeous announced his plan. Kerry clearly won that debate, but here - without a real debate format - the difference is astonishing - and this is nowhere near the best Kerry appearance, though he was good as always.
