2. From having a sports obsessed husband - |
|
Lebron James is an extraordinary basketball player (expected to be the next Michael Jordan level star) and he is making his choice of staying in Ohio, the NYC team, FL and Chicago (and maybe others - I only heard my husband and my Chicago area relatives speaking of it). He has announced that he will make an announcement from Greenwich CT (I think today).
It likely IS true that this is a better PR moment than ANY political campaign has had - because the content (running for President etc is usually really already known.)

I'm with MBS -- I do know who Lebron is, but I had no idea what JK was talking about!

MBS ... Luftmensch067, especially!!! You are awesome!!! And a breath of fresh air. You apparently live in the real world, and I really, really like that!!
See, I live in AKRON, OHIO, THE BIRTHPLACE OF LEBRON JAMES. This 25-year-old young man and excellent basketball player has had all of Northeast Ohio in a total uproar for months over what is now known as THE DECISION. There were rallies, billboards, non-stop media coverage (I was concerned that one local sports anchor would have a stroke on the air before it was all over), and I was completely ready to lose my mind.
We just got back from about 10 days in Massachusetts, and it was WONDERFUL because no one there really CARED about "King James," as he is known locally.
LeBron is a very talented athlete, but sadly is quite full of himself. JK was tweeting about the hour-long special LeBron and his "posse" (no joke) wanted ESPN to provide for his "announcement." ESPN was happy to oblige, and LeBron announced he (and his posse) were off to "South Beach." That went down well (not so much) around here.
JK is right. This special about one very spoiled young man's decision on where to PLAY A GAME garnered more attention than ANYTHING significant in the life of this nation. I checked a related story on-line the following day, and there were more than 2,000 comments. We could NEVER get numbers like that for something that actually matters in our real lives.
Just reminded me again of why I love visiting this group of smart people!! :hi:

Living in the real world is a kind way to describe my abject ignorance about sports. :-) Although I've just joined a new cube at work and now sit next to a guy who is a huge Celtics fan so I've been enlisting him to translate JK's tweets lately! Yes, following a Senator's tweets, that's what I call living in the real world.
Thanks for painting a picture of what it's like to live right next to the madness JK was talking about -- the Celtics fan I work with thought it was pretty absurd, too. We made ourselves laugh wondering if the LeBron Hour would be broadcast on every channel, like the SOTU address!
It's so cool that you spend time here in the summer -- next year, stop by and visit us up in the Boston area!
