Fall of Tripoli shows US was right to establish no-fly zone, Kerry says

WASHINGTON – The surge of rebels into Libya’s capital as Moammar Khadafy’s long-time regime collapsed showed that the United States and NATO were justified in establishing a no-fly zone at the start of the conflict, Senator John F. Kerry said today.

“Now, Khadafy must immediately abandon his doomed hopes of retaining power. Too many Libyans have already died as a result of his selfish quest to stay in control long past his time,” the Massachusetts Democrat said in a statement.

Now, I wonder if the Boston's media reported the statement. Here is Springfield, Channel 3 gave us Brown's statement, but ignored Kerry. Why would we want to hear what the chairman of the SFRC says if we can have the statement of a very junior senator with no experience whatsoever in foreign policy? :sarcasm:

1. It is stunning that they would go to Brown for a comment
If I remember correctly, in February, Kerry recommended doing almost exactly what was done - in the way that it was done. I think he was the first to recommend the no fly zone. Brown was his usual vague self.

What was Brown's comment - is he taking the McCain line or praising Obama?

2. Unbelievable. It would appear the media was bending over backwards yesterday to get Repubs to
comment on the turn of events.

4. CNN pulled out every discredited Bush era neocon out of whatever dark hole they were in to comment

including people like Paul Wolfowitz!

They all spoke of the importance of getting (foreign) boots on the ground because, of course, these rag tag (Blitzers favorite word) people can't possibly organize the country themselves - as they never have. How condescending and culturally insensitive! Not to mention, we have demonstrated well in Iraq and Afghanistan that we can not design a government for another country.

In my mind, I am trying to picture the French, who helped us in the revolutionary war, arguing that civilized, professional European troops are needed to create the structure of government in the colonies - previously governed by Royal Governors from England.

I was glad that Obama's message was that Libya would now have the hard work of setting that up. The SFRC ALL were in favor of a Lugar amendment that emphasized that even in this phase, there should be no American "boots on the ground".
