Not happy with wording of commercial on AAR.
The lady's voice over says that people use depression and anxiety as "excuses" to keep from going on with their lives.

Has anyone else heard this commercial? I didn't catch the specifics, but I am offended. I think this lady needs some guidance from DU. What do you think?

1. don't be offended
obviously she has no concept of how debilitating depression can be. i know first hand now, but before i experienced it, it was abstract, and i remember thinking how "they" should just think of positive things, stop dwelling on the negative etc.
as a foster parent, i went to a class on loss and separation, to better understand what foster kids went through. i assumed i understood, until i personally experienced loss and separation which absolutely crippled me, and i entered what i call the belly of the beast. i became physically ill and stayed that way for about 6 months.
a turning point for me was the book, Radical Forgiveness by Colin C. Tipping, recommended by my therapist. it so changed my perspective about the devastating events in my life, that i recommend it to others.
how is your recovery from surgery going? i havent read many posts from you lately? pain sucks ass.
peace and love to you lady hawk
i am kate

2. Well, since it's from someone who is supposed to be in a position to help,
we should be offended. ESPECIALLY since the commercial is airing on AAR. Next time I hear the commercial, I am going to write down the information and complain to AAR and the so-called "therapist."

3. I don't hear this commercial over here....
but just speculating..... that she is saying something in the line of "people use anxiety and depression as an excuse to not get on with their lives".....when now there are so many pharmaceuticals/therapies which can effectively help....something like this?

Probably she is simply urging people to seek professional help - that by doing this they can get on with their lives....?

5. I'm not familiar with that ad
But I'm very familiar with the attitude. A friend of mine once said to me "People get depressed because they are spoiled and when they grow up and find out they have to work for a living it makes them depressed". She was making a roundabout reference to me (I'm bipolar with a tendency towards depressive episodes) but generalizing it to all people with depression.

I was pretty insulted but said nothing. It doesn't help that she thinks the whole psychiatric industry (medications in particular)is a sham, and she feels pretty much the same about psychology. In her opinion people need to "just get over" things.
