Hi Folks,

I thought I'd share this with you since some of you probably had the same exposure to toxic religious teachings I had:

Psychologist Offers Weekend Retreat For Recovery From Religion

Marlene Winell, Ph.D., the author of a book on recovering from the
psychological scars resulting from a fundamentalist upbringing, is
planning a weekend retreat to focus on what that recovery means.

The retreat is called RELEASE AND RECLAIM: A weekend intensive for letting go of religious indoctrination and reclaiming your life.

Dates: March 3-5, 2006, Friday evening to Sunday afternoon
Location: Rio Del Mar, California (East side of Santa Cruz, by the beach)

The effects of authoritarian religious training can last a long time and run deep, seriously impacting your ability to enjoy life. The process of leaving one's faith often creates intense feelings of confusion, grief, anxiety, and anger. Full recovery can be difficult if the issues are not clear and you feel alone in the struggle.

This workshop is designed to support you in this process of healing and growth. The weekend is a powerful group experience of sharing personal history, examining key issues, and exploring new liberating concepts. In addition to discussion, we will use experiential methods including art, guided visualization, movement, and role-play. There will also be time for shared meals, relaxation, and fun. As a special bonus, we will also have massage and acupuncture treatments available, and staying an extra night to relax is an option for no extra charge.

The setting is a large wonderful house with hot tub, fireplace, and other amenities. See http://agptspics.homestead.com/TRM.html

COST: $320 for the workshop, $120 for room and board
Early registration discount: $20 (Full payment by Feb. 18) REBATE for completed written exercises: $40)
The closest airport is SAN JOSE, and we can arrange transportation from there to Rio Del Mar.

To register and more information, send an email to mwinell@gmail.com. You will receive more details, a registration form, and written exercises.

About Dr. Winell: Marlene Winell is a psychologist and Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies. She grew up in a fundamentalist missionary family, spent some years as a "born-again" Christian, and then went through her own recovery and growth process. She has worked in human services for 30 years and specializes in helping clients who are recovering from religious indoctrination. She is the author of Leaving the Fold: A Guide for Former Fundamentalists and Others Leaving Their Religion. Her private practice is in Berkeley, CA: she also consults by telephone.

My young nephew may need it someday. I grew up in an atheist household (thank goodness!) , but my mom and sister are now fundies. :-(

4. Indeed I am.
My young nephew may need someday, too. :( I hope he will learn to think for himself without the accompanying pain I went through and am still going through. I hope the same for your nephew. Such poisonous teachings! And yet they are actually condoned by society. It's so sad.

I'll let you know how it goes. The book by Dr. Winell is great. It's out of print, but she's going to make it available as an e-book and we may end up as guinea pigs for the new edition. :)

5. Yeah, I'm going, mopinko.
Luckily, I was able to defray costs by helping with preparation. (I also fixed a few computers.)

I will let you know how it goes. Meanwhile I had to give my mother the key to my apartment...I don't know if any of you remember a certain post where the shit hit the fan concerning key privileges, but this should be interesting. Someone has to take care of the animals, though.

7. If anyone hears of anything similar to this, but related to ACOA or
codependency recovery rather than religious indoctrination, please post.
