Anyone take Wellbutrin and Prozac? |
|
Due to marital trouble, husband moved out along with having to put my 13 yo dog to sleep before the holidays. My doc put me on Xanax XR 1mg but at my last visit she add Wellbutrin also. I have been on Prozac (I call it Vitamin P)for many years.
I was just curious about adding the Wellbutrin to Prozac, doc explained how the work but just wanted to know if anyone out there has had personal experience with usage?

1. I only have experience with Wellbutrin |
|
It works pretty well for me at a low dosage. I take 150mg a day. I'm not busting at the seams happy, but I feel better than I did before I started taking Wellbutrin and others have noticed a difference in me. I talk more and I seem to be less detatched emotionally.

2. Well, I have taken Xanax since it was the wonder drug to replace . . . |
|
Valium and also Zoloft (same family as Prozac). I have taken Wellbutrin for years as well. I haven't had any problems.
You call your Prozac your "P" Vitamin. I call my psychiatrist my "supplier."
Ya gotta have a little humor with it all, true??

3. Yes, humor is a necessity. |
|
Doc thinks I should be able to come off Xanax XR, but not until I get through my current crisis.
The XR just kind of stays level in my system so it isn't like the Xanax I used to crave during a panic attack.
Take care!

4. yeah, I'm not on "Xanax" the little pink pill anymore. My psychiatrists |
|
decided it was a horrible drug and I should have never been put on it. (this was decided after 20 years on the drug). They find it causes short-term memory loss, long-term memory loss; however, they didn't know that when it first came out because there were no long studies (i.e. me and other patients on it for 20 years or more). I take Clonopin (still an addictive benzodiazipine) What does it matter after 25 years of being on everything that has ever come out. I have always felt like a guinea pig to these people.
Good luck with it. I hope it works well on the "short-term" for you.

5. Welbutrin is often added to help with sexual side effects |
|
because it tends to increase pleasure make it easier to orgasm. A lot of people I have talked to have noticed this.
In addition, Welbutrin is an atypical antidepressant. it works on different brain pathways than prozac and other serotinin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI')- so used as an ajunctive therapy, it may also increase the overall anti-depressant activity.
On the other hand, as with most antidepressants, people vary considerably in their responses. I know one woman who had some pretty nasty side effects- she hated the stuff- calls it "badbutrin" ;)
However, most people I've talked to (literally hundreds) haven't had any problems with combining it with an SSRI.

my doc kind of explained it that way. The Prozac works on one part and the Wellbutrin on another part of the brain, so it makes sense.
I was just wondering if anyone had experience with it. So far so good for me. I feel much better than when I was on Prozac only.

7. Geez, Minimus, we're in the same boat |
|
My marriage broke up last year. Went on Paxil and gained 20 pounds in just a couple of months. My doc tried other anti-depressants but I had bad reactions to Buspar, Zoloft and Lexapro. I felt like a guinea pig so I stopped all of them. The only thing that helps is Atavan but my doc says it's too addictive so I'm alert and depressed instead of stoned and depressed. Maybe I'll ask about Wellbutrin but it seems if I ask for something, that's the one thing he won't prescribe.
Doggie died the day after New Year's. Here's a  of commiseration.

8. I've been on most antidepressants and Wellbutrin is the best |
|
I have absolutely NO side effects, sexual or otherwise, and it works for my depression. Sometimes I just take 150mg a day but when I feel myself approaching the 'pit' I bump up my dose to 300mg until I even out again.
As antidepressants go, it's the best - at least for me.

10. Careful with Wellbutrin |
|
I hear there are some strange side effects (developing self injury/suicidal behavior).

11. It's odd that Wellbutrin would have that affect on someone |
|
seeing as how those tendencies are what it's prescribed to prevent. But psychiatric drugs sometimes have bad side affects. I take Welbutrin and it has worked good with no side affects. It should be noted that most people are cool with Wellbutrin, but that you should watch out for side affects. That goes the same with any psychiatric medication. A few years back I was taking a drug called Risperdal for psychosis. I couldn't stay awake on the stuff. If that drug had been my only option for psychosis I would be living on welfare right now in Section 8 housing. But I just talked to someone the other day who feels wonderful while taking Risperdal. It doesn't bother her in the slightest. People have different reactions to drugs sometimes. Just monter yourself closely while on meds. A good way to do this is with a journal. When you can get ideas out of your head and onto paper it often gives you a better perspective on what's going on.

12. I only take Prozac now, but took that comb. some years ago |
|
I was on the up side of a serious bout with depression, and was on Prozac, but still having problems with focus. Dr. added Welbutrin, which worked really well.
I haven't taken it since then, but have considered doing so.
