I look at the Penguin guide for basic recommendations on recordings, but they have their little quirks and of course cannot be totally exhaustive.
I have Phil Goulding's Ticket to the Opera just for fun, and I've made some use of Ted Libbey's various guides.
Mostly, though, I approach classical music on a recording-by-recording and/or performance-by-performance basis, and with general references.
