the moon, about as far as I can push it
a sigma 150-500mm lens,a 2x teleconverter and a 1.4 tele.. combines 1400mm on a nikon d7000 for a 35mm equivalent of 2100mm. f 18 iso 2000 shutter speed 1/50th hd to use mirror lock up and let it settle down for about 10 seconds before opening the shutter. this is the best of 20 shots
this is about as far as I can go without a telescope..

1. Good attempt! That is a lot of stacked glass.
The f/18 seems like overkill, but since you were presumably doing manual focus, hedging your bet for a bigger depth of field is not a bad thing. Did you do any calculations about minimum shutter speeds due to the high magnification and subject motion, or did you just wing it?

While full moons can be easier to shoot, the partial moons show so much more surface detail.

3. F18 was as wide as I could go with all the glass
starting with an f6.3 lens, adding a 2x teleconverter loses 2 stops bringing me to f13. adding another 1.4 tele loses another stop so f18 is the result. ( I used the wikipedia chart for the fstops

as far as shutter speeds I know the general rule is 600/effective focal length for no movement so I figured i was pretty safe at the shutter speeds I was using.
I used manual focus and what I did was using the lcd screen I magnified it a couple of times and focused off that.

The details and the texture just knock my socks off!

Nice job!
