Mystery of simultaneous air conditioner failure solved
Friday I posted a thread requesting advice for my dead air conditioners: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x9411657

A little later we lost all electricity. A transformer on our street failed, which caused everyone around us to lose power as well. Apparently, before the total outage there was low voltage or some kind of reduced power situation which made the AC's stop working, but other, less demanding, appliances worked fine. The power was out for a few hours, but when it was restored the air conditioners started right up.

Thanks to everyone for their advice.
