Peregrine Falcon near Lake Mead, NV |
|
I saw a Peregrine Falcon today between Lake Mead and Boulder City. Other highlights include Black-Throated Sparrows, Turkey Vultures, Rock Wrens, White Pelicans, Western Grebes, Clark's Grebes, Gambel's Quail, a Costa's Hummingbird, and one Greater Roadrunner all at the Lake Mead Recreation Area.

1. I have to share my Peregrine story. |

What fanTAStic birds they are to watch in flight.
We had pair of Falcons I came to privately think of as mine in a small way, "My Peregrines";-) because they nested and raised their babies in the cliff behind our house every year for the last three years we lived there.
Summer time after work when I got home I would grab a cup of coffee, the binoculars and kick back in the back yard and watch the almost daily air show of these two Peregrines diving from amazing heights, their wings folded back speeding toward earth then suddenly pulling up out of these incredible dives. At times it seemed they were taking turns like it was an X-games competition for the highest, fastest dives.
I've seen footage of Peregrines in flight on nature and animal programs before, but film can never do them justice. Nothing comes close to actually watching them with your own eyes. My heart soared in awe with them and because of them on many an afternoon and it gladdened the spirit to witness their return to the Estes Valley. Truly an a-m-a-z-i-n-g bird :-)
