An obscurely marked small bird comes into your yard. It perches a moment, teasingly. Then flits off. Then later it returns. Then it goes again. After much use of foul language, you finally identify the bird.
Female House Finch.
Sigh.

there's a bird here that has a "peer, peer" call that I've been hearing for months. Home, work, in the park, at the lake-- this bird is everywhere!
And damned if I know what it is!
The thing was outside my office today half the day taunting me!!!!!

fat little bird squatting in the feed tray, eating seed as for a bet. A female something, maybe a tanager. When I finally got a glass on it turns out to be a cowbird! In my defense it was the 1st one that I've seen at the new(3 years) house, not too suprising as we're pretty much in the woods, seldom see any song sparrows either.

particularly when in the tropics where there is such a profusion of small frogs and lizards and field guides are often unavailable.
Wonder who coined the term? First saw it about 10 years ago.

I used to wonder if some of the Texas birders thought of it.
