:hi: hi folks!
I did run my 5K race today. I was not successful in beating my time, but all was not lost, so please keep reading because this ends really well.
Someone in the lounge yesterday posted a thread asking about these shoes--Z-coils. I had never heard of them before yesterday. Today, someone who sells them had a booth at the race. He even had a running version of the shoe. I tried a pair on, and I like how they felt as I walked in them, so the dealer said I should wear them to run in the race. It was a dry day and he figured I couldn't do too much damage to the shoe in just 3 miles. So I took him up on it.
Big mistake. These shoes are way too heavy to run in. After the first 1/2 mile, I felt like I was running w/ lead weights on my feet.
This combined with a very hilly course is how I explain that I didn't shorten my race time from the last race, but instead added 3 minutes (!!!) to it. I was disappointed, but I guess it's a life lesson. NEVER run a race in new shoes--EVER.
Anyway, since I was one of the last ones to finish I didn't have to wait long for the awards ceremony. It turns out that I brought in the most in pledge money, and I won a bicycle. I didn't even know they were giving away a bicycle, but I won it! The bike at the race was a mountain bike, but since I am hoping to do a sprint triathlon next year, I really had no interest in the mountain bike. When the man who donated the bike introduced himself, I asked him if he thought I could trade it for a road bike, and he made a call down to the store where he bought the bike and I drove there w/ the mountain bike and left there w/ a road bike.
So, I came in nearly last (I did beat the pregnant woman and the 91 year old woman--I probably shouldn't be too proud about that, eh?) but managed to take home a prize anyway. Pretty cool!

10. Lots of races are walk/run |
|
So if you wanted to walk it, you could. Also, since many of these races are fundraisers you can choose a worthy charity and your entry fee is a donation.
There is usually a free t-shirt in the deal--not to mention a GREAT atmosphere. Everybody cheers everyone else on, and is so supportive. If you're last (or near to last) like I am, there are literally hundreds of people cheering you as you cross the finish line--after all, now that you're there, they can start the awards ceremony!

That is excellent. I've always said to myself that I should try my hand at running again. I did it when I was much younger... haven't done it in years.
Who made the bike?

you were running in odd shoes. Kinda like biking on two flats, I think. The fact that you finished at all is awesome.
Nice work. Congrats. You should be very, very proud of yourself.

Very proud of you, and that's good advice about the new shoe thing.
I just got some new shoes and am planning a run tomorrow. I did the elliptical today in them so hopefully that will break them in enough.
You should be very proud of your time and of all of your accomplishments this past year! :yourock:
