Friday, 5/19: I worked out, did you? |
|
Went to an early morning appointment to get my motorcycle serviced, then to the gym. There were only 2 other people in the gym, so I stayed - and stayed - and stayed. Now, this morning (Saturday), I'm like MissMillie's post of yesterday. Man, oh man, I am SORE.

1. I had a bout of heat exhaustion. |
|
I rode my bike and was tooling through the neighborhood, thinking how much fun I was having when the motor conked out just as I was going up a big hill. My bike weighs a ton with the motor and battery and all and it isn't geared all that low but I made it up the first big hill. The next one was too much for me and I started walking. It was 97 degrees out and I really started to feel it. I could only take about two steps at a time before I would have to stop, feeling dizzy and weak. I sat down on the side of the road in the shade and rested, hoping I wouldn't be covered in fire ants -- thankfully, none to be seen. After about ten minutes, I felt like I could try again. I got to the top of the hill and started riding and made it up the next one (my neighborhood is nothing but hills -- no flats at all -- hence, the electric bike!)
There was one more big hill to go and I decided to try the motor again and it worked! I used it sparingly to get up the hill and then made it back to my house. It cut out on me again but fortunately, there is a big downhill before the uphill to my house and I get enough momentum on the downhill to carry me back up. I got into my bathing suit and into the pool for the first time this season!
I just got new batteries so I think I'm back to the problem with a low-voltage cutout. It's also possible that there's a problem with the throttle. Either way, I just don't think I can count on riding this bike to work this summer as I originally planned. Mr. Longhorn is going to get another battery tester to see if we can isolate the problem. But for now, it's back to the elliptical with maybe a follow-up of laps in the pool. :)

2. And heat exhaustion can creep up on you without warning, too. Do |
|
be careful during the hot months while biking - even with a motor. Ms usnret88 insists I take a cell phone on all my bike rides, even though I am rarely more than 10 miles away from home. Except for the one big error of marrying me 38 yrs ago, she's much smarter than I am.

I always have my cell phone and I called my daughter but she was about ten miles away. I decided to see if I felt better after I rested and I did. This definitely snuck up on me!
