Does Pilates training help maintain bone density? |

I am of an age where I need to start worrying about osteoporosis. My mother shrank over 4 inches in her later life, as well as accumulating several pathologic fractures, and I want to prevent that happening to me. (I am already mildly osteopenic in my lumbar spine and left hip and am currently taking Fosamax and extra calcium). I had been working with a personal trainer up until last August (mostly weights and core strength training) and had managed to bring my bone density almost into normal range, but then my trainer left for greener pastures and I haven't found a new one yet.
One of the trainers at my gym has suggested that I begin Pilates training with her and I am considering it (I certainly could use some increased flexibility), but am wondering if it will benefit my bones as well. I have limited time to work out and want to make the most of my training sessions. I am admittedly not very knowledgeable about Pilates - does anyone have any information for me? Personal experience? Thanks!

as well as running. Compressing the bone helps keep bone density up. That was the train of thought in my college health and fitness class.

She has osteoporosis, degenerative joint disease and osteoarthritis. Almost all of the cartilage is gone in her right foot, and her bones look like cottage cheese. Her tendons are almost gone from the wear and tear too. About 10 years ago she alternated between using a walker and a wheelchair, but with physical therapy she was able to transition into a special leg brace. Several years ago she started practicing Pilates with a private trainer and has gotten so into it she has a small studio in their home now. She walks almost normally now (with her brace still, of course) and even can walk up and down stairs, which she couldn't do before.
I know that she would encourage you to give it a try, especially if you have a good teacher. I do Pilates twice a week myself, but my mom has been a huge inspiration to me and it's been so amazing to see her get her mobility (and frankly, her life) back.

Good for your mom! Sounds like she has really worked hard and reaped the results. I will probably have my first session in a couple of weeks, and will think of her as I embarrass myself on the Reformer machine. In my gym, the Reformers are right by the big plate-glass window in front, so I will be exposing all my dubious charms to passers-by on the street. So not only will I be improving my physical condition, but I will be providing free entertainment to the neighborhood!
