One-time foe to head Strickland transition team
11/9/2006, 8:18 p.m. ET
The Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Mayor Michael Coleman will be chairman of Gov.-elect Ted Strickland's transition team, which will help put together the administration that takes office in January.

Coleman was Strickland's one-time rival for the Democratic nomination before dropping out late last year. He said his experience in seven years as mayor will help Strickland and Lt. Gov.-elect Lee Fisher ease into their new jobs. Strickland agreed.

"Mayor Coleman's leadership will be invaluable in putting together an administration which will implement our plan to turn around Ohio," Strickland said.

Strickland defeated Republican Ken Blackwell to become Ohio's first Democratic governor since Richard Celeste left office in 1991.

5. It's very hard for me to get past the fact
that the loss of Congress in 1994 was largely due to Clinton's decision to follow the DLC's strategic advice on most issues in his first two years in power.

The DLC, in general, wants Democratic governors to be as conservative as possible and prefers them to be forced to work with Republican legislatures. The second tends inexorably to lead to the first.

They don't want Strickland's progressive instincts to be obeyed and they don't want Democrats to rebuild in Red States, so I really can't see that it's ever a good sign for them to have influence with Democratic officials anywhere. Basically, as strategists, they AREN't on the party's side.

6. in many cases
politicians join the DLC because it gives them cover among the populace. That doesn't mean they are DLC strategists. Lots of people join all party organizations. I really wouldn't worry too much about this.

7. All I can say is, I hope you're right.
We'd be a lot better off if that organization died out, though.

Their day has passed.
