Has The Wind That Shakes The Barley been released in America yet? And if it has, have you seen it? I went to see it last night and all I can say is that it was fantastic. Set in County Cork, against the backdrop of the formation of the Free State; it is a beautifull, heartwrenching film that artfully balances the personal and the political.

2. I'm looking forward

to seeing it when it comes to the US. There was a lot of back and forth on it at SluggerOToole when it won the Cannes Festival. I finally saw the Magdalene Sisters last week. (Thank God for Netflix). It made me furious...and sad.

Can you recommend any good Irish blogs? My maternal side of my family came here from Galway and I am always interested in things that help me understand my heritage. Not sure where in Ireland the paternal side came from - they arrived during the famine years. I like Slugger (insights on the OO which was not discussed at home)- and I read Nelly's Garden because she does daily life in such a way I almost feel like I know her.

I don't think they've announced release dates for the U.S. Rumor has it that it could be nearly the end of the year before it hits the States. :banghead:

One website suggested the Australian release date is September 14th, and I think September may be the month when it's released in Canada.

O'Brien gave March 14 as the launch date — "in time for St. Patrick's Day," but IFC executives were less certain. Either March 14 or March 16 is "99.9%" likely for the U.S. release, in theaters in New York and Los Angeles, and perhaps other top metro markets, IFC's Panzer said. IFC plans a "traditional platform release across the country, " she added. This could ultimately entail release in 20 or more markets, but, depending on the film's drawing power, these plans could change, Panzer said.

The film's delay in reaching the United States, O'Brien said, is typical of "films made without U.S. financing, as the legal side of delivery is far more complex than in other territories." Distributors in other countries had pre-bought the film or are regular customers, she said, making negotiations "quicker and simpler."

Apparently the U.S. release problems are related to distribution and not content.

Many thanks for your kind offer, but I'm not technologically up to viewing a copy yet. Ah, well, at least I can support the film when it arrives at my local theater. I fully expect the arts theaters and perhaps the American Film Institute to run it when it does arrive.

13. It's finally being released in the States.

The Wind That Shakes the Barley opened in New York the other week and is just about to reach Washington, D.C. (Opening is scheduled for Friday). Here's Ann Hornaday's interview with Ken Loach in today's Washington Post.

I'm a little nervous about seeing it.

I also have Michael Collins in my queue and still haven't seen it. It doesn't help my impression of the film to know that Julia Roberts was cast in it, and on top of that there's the debate over the film's conclusions (something my family and friends have unique perspectives on).

It gives an interesting view of the period and people. I wouldn't take the portrayal of Dev at face value, true enough...he was much more complex, to begin with...
Admitted, I'd watch and enjoy just about anything with Liam Neeson in it!

17. I have a galley of Tim Pat Coogan's...

...Wherever Green Is Worn, which I'll have to get reading. I got it from a family with a connection to de Valera (can't explain here).

I don't need too much of an excuse to watch a movie that stars Liam Neeson, Aidan Quinn, and Alan Rickman. The reasons for casting Neeson are obvious, of course, but what most people might not realize is that Alan Rickman is of Irish descent.

But I still don't get why they cast Julia Roberts, any more than I can wrap my head around the notion of casting Cameron Diaz in The Gangs of New York. :shrug: That's another thread, though.

18. Ken Loach festival is on at AFI in Silver Spring, MD

DUers in the Washington, D.C., area can still catch The Wind that Shakes the Barley on the big screen. The American Film Institute's Silver Theatre is having a Ken Loach retrospective and has scheduled TWTSTB to air on October 15th, 16th, and 17th. See link for show times.

20. Wow

I finally got a copy yesterday that would play in my DVD player. That could have been the most heart wrenching movie I have ever seen in my life. I was almost sick before during and after the scene with Chris. That is the most raw emotional reaction I have gotten out of a film ever. Well done!
