OK - what does this mean exactly?
Escribe 5 nombres para 15.
To write 5 numbers that make 15? (1+14, 2+13)
or 5 numbers BY fifteen? (13, 14, 16, 17)
or 5 numbers from fifteen (13, 45, 60)
??
Ok - so I'm having trouble with 2nd grade math now.

1. Second-hand from a friend in Mexico: |
|
"you have to write 5 different names for the number 15, like 5 different ways you can express that number"
"like, 1x15, 2x7.5, 3x5, etc?"
"Exactly."
Hope it helps!

After all, you're dealing with a language-sourced problem. You're more than capable to solve the math "problem" itself.
Not to jump on your horse here and run away for good with it, but I think it's interesting to point out that the so-called "practical skills" oriented approach in fundamental math education in primary ed is, by its nature, also VERY much more language-oriented.
And that is yet another hurdle to overcome for students who are at the same time struggling with English as a second language or ESL: as well-founded as the arguments to step away from "classic" math instruction are, the inherently language-independent nature of math -- 2+5=7 in every language after all -- made that a special area for relatively greater success for ESL students; now, the "practical skills" oriented math methods have taken that "virtual equalizer" away, adding another language-sourced hurdle, and removing a potentially vital subject that motivates by way of comparative success.
Hokay, here's your horse again... ;)
