I've been reading Ann Rule and discovered I really like True Crime. I am coming to the end of her oeuvre, though. Do the members of this group have any suggestions for other authors I might enjoy? (I just saw a posting asking for new threads; so I figured this was as good a time as any to post this.)

Vincent Bugliosi, Edna Buchanan, Jack Olsen... oh, I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch of others who'll pop into my head as I'm falling asleep tonight. :D

3. I think that the late Darcy O' Brien's work is truly outstanding... |
|
he started out as a "literary" author (even winning the Ernest Hemingway Award in 1978) before turning to true crime. I highly recommend any of his books. Anything by the late Jack Olson is also very good. The same for Joe McGinnis and Shana Alexander. Of course, there is always Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood", but that masterpiece transcends the genre.

8. Already read "In Cold Blood" |
|
I agree, absolute masterpiece. And one of the few times I can honestly put the movie on par with the book.

Once I run through the local library's Rule collection I'll move on to these other authors.

9. emlyn william's 'beyond belief' the moors murders |
|
it's gotta be one of the most unique true crimes books i've ever read; though some might find the conversational tone rather disconcerting! darcy o'brien's '2 of a kind, the hillside stranglers' and harold schector's schlock books on a) albert fish (deranged?) b) psycho ed gien 'depraved? etc are taken right from the old newspapers, but still are page turners...brian master's 'killing for company' about dennis neilson, or ann rule's 'stranger beside me' (teddy bush er bundy) all are excellent. See 'the happy like murders' by gordon burns, about the raw onion eating fred west and his lovely wife ruthie, is a fascinating look at a real family man! klol! Also, check out 'Redrum the innocent' by kirk makin (about a guy wrongly accused of child's murder) and jack olsen's 'the man with the candy' about the houston mass murders .....anyone who's never read rupert thorp's 'the river' which was inspired by the green river killer-well in light of gary ridgeway's capture in 2001(!!)
