sound flippant. The railroad killer had everyone around here very frightened for awhile.
I think this happened in 1998, or early in 1999...
Two of my son's friends, who were in high school at the time, had a summer job helping a local man do some upkeep on various rental properties. One day, they resurfaced driveways. It was hot, nasty work. At the end of the day, they went to a local creek, which is north of town and near the railroad tracks. They went swimming and relaxed before heading home. They did not realize that one of them had left behind a jacket with a receipt in it that contained his address.
One day later, the boy and his family got a visit from the FBI. The dad is a friend of mine, and he could not imagine what his kid had done to warrant a visit from the FBI. They asked the boys questions, and told them why the FBI was hanging around secluded creeks in small towns. The agents then warned the boys away from swimming in that area until the railroad killer was apprehended. The killer had murdered people who were simply walking along the tracks.
The boys and their families were very sobered by the visit. We were all kind of stunned to learn that the FBI was hanging around our poky little town. One of the boys had an uncle who had some shirts made for the kids. The shirts were captioned, "Ask me about the FBI."
Of course we were all happy when this maniac was captured.

3. Scary story. I hope it isn't in poor taste for me to post that the "Ask for about the FBI" |
|
bit made me laugh, though.

The guy was a vicious murderer. People who heard about the visit from the FBI were sobered. I think the uncle had the shirts made up to lighten everyone's mood without throwing caution to the winds. The kids hadn't done anything wrong, and the FBI seemed to handle it pretty well. My friend would have had a cow if they had been heavy-handed with his son.
