I have a temporary crown over a cracked tooth, question
Should I be having as much pain as I have been experiencing since getting this temp. crown?

My permanent crown should be here soon and doc says I don't need a root canal in this tooth (had one long ago)..will the permanent crown alleviate the pain? This tooth is the ONLY tooth that holds my partial (whichI have not been able to wear since before Thanksgiving)

Thanks to anyone who can tell me about this problem.

1. If you've had a root canal done in that tooth
the nerve should be gone and there should be no pain.

If you are having pain, especially in the jaw and when you bite down, either the root canal wasn't complete or you have an infection at the root.

Call the dentist. Severe pain with a temporary crown is unusual.

One thing they never tell you about root canal teeth: they can still rot.

Nothing is as bad as a mouthful of bad teeth. Been there.

2. Also... maybe not so much on the not needing another root canal
It turns out that some canals have branches. I had my first root canal as a kid. 25 years (maybe more!) later, the same tooth was causing me unbelievable pain. I needed another root canal. I guess mine branched off, which the first person to do a canal didn't or couldn't see.

The temporary crown might cause some discomfort, but I don't think outright pain ought to be part of it. Possibly your bite might be off from it - and if you clench or grind at night, that might make for some pain...

You need to call the dentist.

3. That's what I meant by an incomplete root canal
In any case the dentist needs to be seen ASAP. Severe pain is not normal.

4. Agreed.
(And I just added that because I was so totally stunned when it happened. I mean, I was in unbearable pain, pain I unfortunately knew from experience, but I also knew that tooth had long been gone. Couldn't possibly be that... and delayed help a bit, thinking I must be out of my mind.)
