I don't mean to say there is something wrong with that.
But, how did this tradition of silence take hold?
It's ok to discuss poetry, even if it is horrible.

1. Seriously, I would even appreciate an honest slam-- |
|
I think it's because some of us write poetry on automatic, and maybe we don't even read poetry that much. We throw out our lines, but we want to fish, and not sometimes get caught on anothers' lines.
I think the problem with breaking the atmosphere of "respectful silence" (I think of it as "beat"--criminy, if someone's down, don't comment, just post "snap, snap, snap". Be sure to use the "sarcasm" smiley if you don't mean it) is it might invite a "savaging" once one unloads one's own recent ugly baby. Poets are wired differently, I think, regarding poetry. It's personal, in a way so much else isn't. We know we can't convey all of our experiences or necessarily make the best argument this way, or state some staggering truth--
Sometimes all we do is what ol' Chuck Bukowski might have considered a beer fart. But I'd like to think my beer farts are precious. Maybe we all do. So we don't design to tell anyone else where they fell short. So never mind me, I'm on to display my most recent late-term abortionbeer fart and if someone here responds it probably will have the same impact on me as my last whiskey and soda did.
It will either make me stronger or destroy my liver. I have onions on the pan at the ready to eat my long-soaked vital organ my own self. My ofering being doggerel and deliberately so--so there! And about something serious!
And showmanship! And I write poetry because I have to not because I want to--who's with me?

2. Yes, "snap" could be our "kick," |
|
As an impulsive poster, I appreciate that like old film-based snapshots, one good shot per roll is a pretty good average.

3. Ever notice this in the Admin's intro to the Poetry Group? |
|
The DU Poetry Group is for all members who are interested in writing, reading, and TALKING ABOUT poetry. The group is meant to be a place where WE CAN TALK CONSTRUCTIVELY ABOUT EACH OTHER'S POEMS as well as discuss poetry by other authors ranging from the obscure to the classics.

7. If you go back a few pages in this forum, conversations happened |
|
Perhaps the loss of people like One Eighty took the momentum away.

4. This forum is very quiet... |
|
I wonder if you'll even see what I'm saying here...
I think a lot of folks just are afraid to say anything about poetry because they're afraid of looking foolish.
And a lot of folks who write poetry (and that includes me) don't post in here since there is so little traffic. Or at least commenting traffic.

5. What you wrote has been seen... |
|
Fear is a possibility. If it is fear of looking foolish where did that come from? I wasn't here at the beginning of the start-up of the forum so I really don't know.
We know that being foolish doesn't stop all the posting in GD, which includes a remarkable amount of foolish comments.
Nor does foolishness stop the posting in The Lounge a place which is fairly dedicated to posting foolishness.

It is good to be seen, and heard.
So often I forget to come in here to see if anyone has posted anything.
I will try to come by more often. Maybe we can shake things up a bit. I might even post a poem...

8. I feel weird about discussing it. Personal flaw. |
|
But I do enjoy California Peggy's comments.
