Calcium Orotate, anyone?
OK, so I read last year about a new study that had shown that Omega 3s plus uridine were more effective than antidepressants, but it seemed that uiridine was not available as a supplement. This week, eDiets.com had an article about it, so I did another search. I still couldn't find it. But after surfing a while, I found references to Oratic Acid, which is part of the pathway to make uridine, and then Calcium Oratate as a source of Oratic Acid...

Anyway, I was interested in it for it's mood enhancing properties, and then on the same site, I found this article, anecdotally describing it's effect on weight loss:

I couldn't find it anywhere locally, but ordered it online. Of course, I know there are no magic pills, but if it keeps me off antidepressants, and as a side effect helps me control my appetite, I certainly won't mind! I will continue eating well, and begin exercising now that my cold is almost gone, but any little advantage wouldn't be a bad thing.

I just thought I would share this info, in case anyone else might be interested.

1. thanks, Lisa0825 for sharing this
I am bookmarking your thread, so I can read about this later, when I have more time. I would definitely be interested in learning more about this. Is it something that a GNC would have?

2. I couldn't find anyone who carried it locally, including GNC,
but found the Calcium Orotate from several sources on line. I ordered from www.GRLVitamins.com .

If the current evidence holds up and proves to be as promising as it seems both for mood and apetite, I figure more companies will start selling it.

I also read somewhere that Uridine as a supplement was rejected by the FDA. There is some debate about whether or not it is as safe as proponents say it is. But I don't exactly trust the FDA these days anyway.... I mean, I would expect that most OTC meds and supplements can be hazardous if taken in the wrong way.

But in the end, it could be that the Calcium, Magnesium or Lithium chelates could be a better way to go, and maybe those will be easier to find. After all, I could use more calcium anyway!

3. I have been taking it for about a week now.
I generally don't struggle with cravings. It's more like just a "what the hell" thing to me... I just eat whatever I want and that causes me to gain, but I don't seem to have major cravings. So I can't say if it has helped in that respect. I have been doing pretty well as far as eating healthy.

What I HAVE distinctly noticed is a side effect that mimics a side effect from Celexa... When I begin taking Celexa, for the first couple months, I wake up about 2 hours earlier than I should (around 4am). It used to drive me CRAZY because I would be wide awake, and unable to fall back to sleep, and then I'd be exhausted later in the day.

Since I started taking the fish oil with the calcium orotate, I have been waking up every morning around 4-4:30. But the difference is that I have been able to fall back to sleep most days. Still, since that is not a normal sleep pattern for me, I recognized it right away. So, if the side effect is similar, perhaps, the serotonin levels are actualy being affected. Oh, now that I am thinking about it, I also had very vivid drems a few nights, another side effect from the Celexa.

I am about to go on a stricter phase of dieting, so we'll see if I have any issues with cravings then.
