My first bike ride with the new cycling computer |
|
I braved the traffic, the drunks and the derelicts of Vegas tonight shortly after midnight and took my bike for a spin. I wanted to test my new Cat Eye cordless cycling computer, and also see what this 400-pounder could handle. I invented a course that takes me through the UNLV campus and around the perimeter. The elevation changes are pretty small and the sidewalks and paths are wide with very little traffic of any kind late at night.
And here it is:
Time (Tm): 28m 22s Average Speed (AS): 10.1mph Maximum Speed (MS): 16.4mph Distance (Ds): 4.80 miles
Lance Armstrong, eat yer heart out!

I bet that is going to be a helpful little gadget. You can ride where ever you want and you will always know how far you gone. It would be cool if they invented something like that for walkers. Then I could walk anywhere I wanted and still know how far I've gone.

2. For less than the $50 I spent on my Cat Eye computer |
|
you could get a pedometer that may not be 100% exact, because the length of your stride varies, but if you program in a value that's within a centimeter or two of your average pace you will get very close to measuring your exact distance. I would guess that $20 would be more than enough for a nice one that will also keep some rudimentary stats for you in a memory cell.

3. It's fun charting your progress that way. |
|
Even when the scales don't show improvement, you can keep your spirits up by seeing the progress on your bike.
I have a Cat Eye Astrale 8 on my hybrid and a Sony combination radio/computer on my electric bike. I almost went wireless on the second one but was afraid that there would be interference from the throttle, which does cause my heart rate monitor to stop. But it turns out, so does the radio!
Happy cycling!
