T/F: Anti-choice legislation is really pro-prostitution legislation. |
|
Edited on Mon Aug-03-09 06:56 AM by BlueIris
This is something I saw posted in General Discussion or wherever on here a few days back. It really got me thinking. The person who put it out there wasn't flaming or anything, just stating that s/he believed that the primary motive behind most anti-choice political moves is to create a steady stream of young, disenfranchised women who have had to leave homes and families to "deal with" their unintended pregnancies (trying to end pregnancies in other states, etc.) and run the high risk of winding up engaged in prostitution.
I've actually...never heard this theory about anti-choicers before. What do we think, feminists? Is this part of the "real reason" they do what they do to our legal system?

The same people who crusade against choice often crusade against prostitution, at least if it's in their neighborhoods.
I don't doubt that there is some correlation between lack of choice and the availability of desperate young women for the prostitution business but it's not as simple and direct as that.
Taking away women's choices and forces them to assume a large financial burden for 18+ years, is going to add to the pool of desperate women. Especially if, in many families, that financial burden comes with a load of family shame that might cut off support from family sources. You're forced to raise the kid, but you're forced to do it alone.
Yes, a certain number of those woman are likely to end up coerced into prostitution because of a lack of other options in a sexist, sex driven society.
They are certainly related issues, but that doesn't mean that one issue exists because of the other, or to deliberately feed the other.

2. See, this is what I was thinking. |
|
I think the primary motive of anti-choice people is to control sex, specifically a woman's right to engage in it (at least somewhat) freely, but I just don't see a strong pro-prostitution angle.
But that's me.
Welcome back, by the way.

3. Only the goals are the same |

Control over womens bodies. Women are the sex class, and the attempts at reproductive control makes them human brood mares.
The forced birth folks and the pro-prostitution folks both use the patriarchal heterosexist model of morality and sexuality. They certainly don't think they're in the same camp, but they do compliment each other.

6. Girls in bad situations are easier to compromise |
|
into a worse one - IE married to the abusive asshole because he "take care" of her. They get the idea reinforced into them that "no one wants a single mother' so they "should just be happy to be abused and have a roof over their head"... and all that bullshit.
I don't know if the anti-choicers can actually think to that extent, but the number of women in bad relationships just so their kids are "taken care of" is so distressing!
But is is as someone here said...
They just want control over your bodies (and minds).
IIRC rape is less about sex as it is about having power over someone else. An these assholes really seem to get off on that shit as long as it's not their daughter.
