I think it will be ignored by those who need to read the message the most. But at least it's there. I did my part to educate. They need to do their part to learn.

I did post a couple replies to one of the posters who was dismissive.

Gone now. Sorry, but thanks for trying. And thanks for teaching. I don't really know how hateful that word can feel, but having read more than enough posts opposing it's usage, I have enough empathy and respect to not use it. I don't know that it was ever high on my list of swear words anyway. I've always understood it was directed at women, and I've always like women in general.

I'll tell ya what the context is. The context it's always used in is the one where women get to be the punching bags of the world. To be the repository of every ugly, shitty, hateful, brutal, demeaning thought or deed you reserve for those you deem less than human.

Some people are justifying it's use by claiming that the meaning of words change over time. That's true. The original definition of bitch is female dog. Then it became a word applied to a disagreeable woman. Now it's often used to mean any woman, or a man one wishes to denigrate by comparing him to a woman.

Words evoke images. Does the word bitch cause the image of a female dog to pop up in most people's minds? I doubt it. Bitch - What image comes to mind?

The thread in question used not only a word hateful towards women to make its point, but also used other terms which were inflammatory and in violation of DU rules concerning the use of bigoted language.

Being opposed to the use of sexist or bigoted terms doesn't grant license to use them.
