it was a pretty wimpy post but I feel pretty beaten down right now. I thought they just might come around if they realized what a poor choice of timing this OP showed. Not that I ever care to see any of this but what a bad time it is to do this. A thread like this inevitably gets into the realm of sexism and homophobia, as this one has. References to "sissies," references to "Hustler," etc. I think a thread like this is INTENDED to get around the rules against those types of bigotry -- after all, it's just good, clean FUN, right? Or if not intended, then definitely appropriated by some for the express purpose of letting out a little of their sexism, and a little of their homophobia.

It's NOT suitable for a progressive board, IMO, and doesn't fall within DU guidelines either.

I stay out of the lounge 99% of the time because it's just a bunch of bullshit. Most posters (NOT ALL) only go there for the "fun" and to "have a good time". You rarely see them making any posts on forums of any substance. Well that's fine. I'm here on this site for other reasons.

it's a poor time to joke about objectifying women. It seems that the primary way of making fun of oneself as a manly-man (at least judging by that thread) is to denegrate women. Why is that?

to stop them? I have seen it over and over again, I am sure we all have. When has anything you ever said made one little bit of difference? We can do all the research we want into this, we can meet and discuss and stand up for our rights as much as we want but they DO NOT want to change and they do not have to because they truly do have all the power. I am not being defeatist although I certainly feel that right now but I do believe we have worked and worked and made some significant ground but the fact remains that until they control themselves and seek out learning themselves it will not change. Our true feminist male friends may be the only ones who can really make a difference. If we take it it just gets worse, if we fight it it just gets worse. Until they learn some self control, until they learn to respect us as humans, until they have to keep it in their pants I do not see a change.

I hope that made some sense, I am cleaning house while listening to Randi and posting off and on. Now I must go make my husband move away from the computer for 5 minutes while I vacuum. Do you know what a witch that makes me? Unbelievable, simply disgusting.
