I am so upset I couldn't attend the memorial today.

Ceremonies commemorate Dec. 6 attack on women

Vigils and candlelit walks were among the events being held across Canada on Tuesday to honour the women gunned down 16 years ago in the so-called Montreal massacre.

The special day to mark the Dec. 6, 1989 shooting deaths of 14 young women at L'École Polytechnique de Montréal also included renewed calls for measures to stop violence against women.

Gunman Marc Lepine, 25, stormed an engineering class on the last day of the term before the Christmas break, proclaiming he was getting even because feminists had ruined his life.

Lepine killed 14 young women, and then himself.

There is a link on that page to the cbc archives, detailing more about the murders.

2. That is such a horrible thing
I was reminded of this - that I saw in the news yesterday. Purdue is primarily an engineering school as well...

Purdue police hope women will protect themselves

Associated Press
December 5, 2005

WEST LAFAYETTE (INDIANA) - "City and campus police are urging women at Purdue University to take steps to protect themselves after three reported attacks against female students in a 24-hour period.

Precautions can be as simple as letting a friend know a destination and when arrival home is expected, Capt. John Cox of the Purdue University Police Department said.

If possible, students should walk with others at night, Cox said, and he encouraged use of the Safe Walk program in which other students and sometimes police officers are sent to walk a student home...."

3. Whenever insecure men rant about "man hating feminists," I remind them
of this incident.

I can't recall any incident in which a woman opened fire on a crowd of men claiming that men had ruined her life.

4. So true
And I'm sure more than one woman has had that fantasy.

5. The stupid thing about it
is that it was not even "feminists" who ruined Lepine's life, it was his father. The guy beat him and his mother and sister, then left them and the mother had to support and bring up her children all by herself.
