I am getting really pissed off in GD lately... (rant.........)
I doubt I am the only one who has noticed the gender war in GD lately... I am starting to get really disgusted with having everything a woman says that could be regarded as slightly outside the norm in regards to feminism, abortion, sexual violence, and pornography attacked and made to look foolish and unimportant.

I wish this group was more active than it seems to be...

Anyway, just a rant.

2. Thanks...
You wanna know the really ironic thing about it? I've always considered myself a feminist, but being around DU has turned me into a completely different type of feminist than I was before--and I think a lot of it has to do with having all of my own convictions repeatedly justified here, usually by people who disagree with me, lol.

On a really serious note, I am reading "Trandforming a Rape Culture" and tonight I was talking to a good male friend of mine in AIM, and I started telling him about it, and right after I wrote the title, he sent me a message that said, "Wow, sounds like a "hard" read."

I was so angry. What he said was so unlike him, but that just proved how pervasive sexual violence is in our society and how commonplace and accepted it has become...

3. It is foolish and unimportant
You women are just being hormonal, whiney crybabies on a rampage. There's nothing for you to be complaining about here on DU. I mean, the men here are perfectly supportive of women in every way shape and form.

Unless they make waves. Then they get b*tch-slapped into reality by some of the less progressive members.

You just need to know the rules. Don't demand say over if and when you'll carry a baby. Don't give a darn that women are treated as commodities for mens' sexual pleasure. Don't express a desire for equal pay when you are doing equal work. Don't point out reality in any way, because if you do you're the bad girl.

9. Yeah, and don't you DARE say that calling a woman
names like "bitch" "ho" "slut" "skank" is sexist, because it's NOT, so just STOP SAYING THAT!

That's what's been getting my goat lately, calling someone on the language they're using, asking them to stop and think about what they're saying, and having them go off about how the "PC police" are ruining society. Gag me!

23. Indeed
And calling a black person the "N" word or a Hispanic person the "S" word isn't racist.

People don't get it because they just don't want to.

4. I agree completely
It's been very hard to read GD since all the abortion stuff has been making the news. It makes me sick to my stomach to think we have some on this site that actually think that women should be made into incubators. And believe me, we do. Especially some men on here, who will NEVER have to go through an abortion or pregnancy.

I was going to post my abortion story in that thread "I had an abortion 20 years ago" but I just couldn't do it. My adoption story is 20x worse, too. I did post a link to that in the thread about Bush pushing for maternity homes. But all this stuff is just making me so sick to think about.

5. Whoooooooooo boy....
*sigh* I'm already more pissed about the abortion travesty than I've probably been about anything in my life. I had been staying out of GD, because it generally devolves into name calling and irrationality when something important comes up, but I went back to see how the news would be met. :eyes: That was a sad mistake. It seems the heartfelt threads have been replaced by "why is there so much men bashing here?" :eyes::eyes::eyes::eyes::eyes: What total bullshit! It these twits put half as much energy fighting abortion as they put into men bashing threads, this wouldn't be a fucking issue.

I wish this group was more active than it seems to be...

I like to think that the group isn't active because we're active in real life.

Have a  We don't need to lose anymore women to high blood pressure and strokes. ;)

6. Yup I find it sad but too typical...
that on International Women's Day there are at least 3 threads on the GD front page that are essentially about how awful it is that us uppity wimmin aren't giving men the respect they deserve.

There's a lot of anger and defensiveness over there right now. I don't understand it.

8. This is a little off-topic, but one of the funnier things I see here when
abortion comes up is the number of men who feel completely justified in expecting to be let off the hook for child support if their woman chooses not to have an abortion. They actually think that they would be exercising their "choice".

Many of them seem completely unable/unwilling to grasp that a born child is entitled to the support and resources of both parents. This is settled law and has been forever, and, if they actually think that the broader society is going to agree to pick up the tab for their offspring because they opted out, they must be crazy. With all the resentment re: welfare among the populace now, do they really think society would just agree to pay for their child too? What a laugh.

But I seldom bother to argue this with them, they refuse to see the distinction, and it is not good for my blood pressure in any case.

10. My response to that bit of idiocy is generally:
"if you don't want to be 'trapped' into paying child support, I suggest you either wear a condom, have a vasectomy, or practice abstinence. Otherwise, shut the hell up about it. You father the child, you have a legal and moral obligation to support it. Sucks to be you, hey?"

11. "Sucks to be you, hey?"
That's EXACTLY how I see it too, with a healthy dose of "welcome to my world" thrown in. I'd like to say: "you think it's unfair - poor you! Try walking in my shoes for a while, you'll find out real quick what unfair is!"

which is why I was supportive but not in favor of retreating off the big boards.

These flamewars only prove yet again where the priorities are.

17. Thanks--
I am trying. I have to be honest--I am only in my 20s and I never really thought much about feminism (except in historical terms) until recently. I am now in the process of completely re-educating myself (mostly by reading waaaaay too many books, lol) and it is shocking how little I know, as a woman, about the problems facing women in our society and in the world.

I think that most people (in the universe and here on DU) are about as informed about "women's" issues as I was until recently, and they need to hear what we have to say, because no one else is going to tell them.

Your thread rocked by the way--thank you for posting that.

:toast:

20. It's pretty amazing at how the patriarchy keeps women uneducated
and silent. We must consciously fight it. I have been thinking that we need 'consciousness-raising' groups again. The ways in which women are oppressed can be so subtle but so destructive....watching TV is dangerous to a women's health and well-being!

So glad you are reading and informing yourself. Knowledge is power.

I didn't read any of the General Discussions....even though I have low blood pressure. The willful ignorance of some men just irritates the shit out of me.

This S. Dakota and Mississippi catastrophe has me so angry...I spit a few nails yesterday.

I wish a lawmaker in S. Dakota would have the 'balls' to introduce a bill that would require castration of all rapists.

21. My all time favorite sickening thread topic in GD...?
The threads about girls and/or teens being molested by adult men. These are so much fun (NOT), because the usual suspects come out of the woodwork with their "...but what if she consented?","...what if the guy was just a couple of years older?", "...maybe he didn't really rape her..." :wtf:

The last time I got into it on such a thread, I was admittedly over zealous in my responses. In my own defense, it was because of all the other times I've seen the same sort of responses to similar or identical issues. The thread barely gets started before one of them shows up with their apologist attitudes for the poor guy that committed a crime. :eyes: It sickens me to no end! :grr::mad:

The day someone posted about the female teacher that slept with a student, again they showed up. This time to "wonder" if the boy was really hurt or molested, because what male wouldn't want some hot older woman to come onto them?

Again, :wtf:?!

The only people I have on ignore, came from me responding and duking it out with on that kind of thread. I've done my best to steer clear of those sort of topics since that occured. Just not worth getting my ass flamed over. :eyes:
