In cases where the recipient was expecting my e-mail, I sent with only a note and the cover letter as an attachment, otherwise I put the letter as the body of the e-mail.

3. This is what I've done with some success |

I've also heard that you might want to include the resume in the body of the email rather than just as an attachment. Of course include the attachment but if for some reason the potential employer can't open your resume, you have given them an alternative. Also considering that half the resume attachments will never be opened (HR spends approximately 30 seconds on each resume received), you're a step up in getting them to see your resume and not just the cover letter.

That's usually what I do. |
|
The first thing I do is check to see if there are specifications -- i.e., "Send cover letter and resume," "Send resume in PDF," etc.
Where there are specifications for a cover letter and a resume, I put the resume in the body of the e-mail.

5. I would recommend putting |
|
the cover letter and the resume in an email attachment, and then writing a short note in the email itself. That seems to be the preferred way of doing things for most employers who want emailed resumes.
