Hitchens profile in the New Yorker reveals him to be a deranged sadist
Alcoholism is the least of his character deficits. Has anyone read the article in the New Yorker? It's not online. Definitely worthy of discussion, though, as it sheds some light on Hitch's willing assumption of the attack doggy position for the Bushists. In a nutshell, he's a sucker for strokes from people in power, and this allowed him to be seduced by Wolfowitz and other neo-cons, who flattered him with invitations to power lunches at the Pentagon (where, presumably, alcohol was served). Disgusting human being.

Here's more about the article from Ezra Klein:

Christopher Hitchens Has Gone Mad
The latest New Yorker has a (sadly offline) profile of Christopher Hitchens by Ian parker. It's not clear to me why Hitchens, whose day of influence has decidedly passed, merits a profile, but it's hard to argue when the material is this good. Parker relates a dinner party attended by Hitchens and his wife. Relaxed occasion, Hitchens and some women are shooting the shit over Gavin Newsome's good looks and Iranian politics, when one of the attendees makes a "passing but sympathetic remark" about Howard Dean, saying he felt Dean was unfairly maligned by the media. Hitchen's reply:

Dean was "a raving nut bag," ...then he corrected himself: "A raving, sinister, demagogic nutbag...I and a few other people saw that he should be destroyed.

Hitchens then recalls a time when Dean spoke against mandatory parental notification laws by telling of 12-year-old child who'd come to his office seeking an abortion. The baby was her father's. But Dean hadn't told the authorities of the incident, and it seemed that it may have happened to someone else, or been exaggerated, or something. Hitchens uses this to brand Dean a "pathological liar," and when some at the table protest, Hitchens turns his shotgun full of crazy on the assembled:

"Fine, now that I know that, to you, medical ethics are nothing, you've told me all I need to know. I'm not trying to persuade you. Do you think I care whether you agree with me? No. I'm telling you why I disagree with you. That I do care about. I have no further interest in any of your opinions. There's nothing you wouldn't make an excuse for. You know what? I wouldn't want you on my side. I was telling you why I knew that Howard Dean was a psycho and a fraud , and you say 'That's O.K.' Fuck off. No, I mean it: fuck off. I'm telling you what I think are standards and you say, 'What standards? It's fine, he's against the Iraq War.' Fuck. Off. You're MoveOn.org. Any liar will do. He's anti-Bush. Fuck off...Save it sweetie, for someone who cares. It will not be me. You love it, you suck on it. I now know what your standards are, and now you know what mine are, and that's all the difference -- I hope -- in the world."

This was at, mind you, a dinner party. Why Hitchens went completely insane, losing is a fascinating question. Parker argues, and I agree with him, that he was particularly afflicted by the Great Man of History Syndrome.

In a 2003 interview, Hitchens said the events of September 11th filled him with "exhiliration." His friend Ian Buruma, the writer, told me, "I don't quite see Christopher as a 'man of action,' but he's always looking for our defining moments--as it were, our Spanish Civil War, where you put yourself on the right side and stand up to the enemy." Hitchens foresaw "a war to the finish between everything I love and everything I hate." Here was a question on which history would judge him; and just as Orwell had (in his view) got it right on the great questions of the 20th century -- Communism, Fascism, and imperialism -- so Hitchens wanted a future student to see that he had been similarly clear-eyed (He once wrote, "I have tried for much of my life to write as if I was composing my sentences posthumously.)

Absorb that: This isn't about 9/11, or "Islamofascism," or repression in the Arab World. It's about Christopher Hitchens. It's about his need for an enemy great enough, dark enough, sinister enough, and threatening enough that he can match the exploits and courage of Orwell's unpopular, often courageous crusades.

It explains, too, why Hitchens and so many like him are quick to inflate the dangers posed by Islamic extremists, to make threats out of enemies and existential dangers out of garden variety terrorists. If they don't, if they allow al Qaeda to remain a degraded organization with limited operational capacity that should be mopped up through diligent law enforcement strategies, then where does that leave them in the eyes of history? Orwell battled against Communism, Hitchens is going to take a brave posture against 27 bearded nuts who want white men to leave their lands?

Surprised about the choice thing-I somehow thought he used being pro-choice to lash out at Mother Teresa...

8. This might sound weird,
but I believe Christopher Hitchens has been driven a bit mad by his rivalry with his brother, Peter, who overshadows him completely. Peter Hitchens is more talented, more respected and better looking. Christopher is obsessed with leaving his mark on the world ("Here was a question on which history would judge him ... so Hitchens wanted a future student to see that he had been similarly clear-eyed) and it colours everything he does and says.

45. He's definitely conservative with a small "c",
but I'm not sure I'd call him "rabidly" right-wing, although he's certainly on the right. I think he just likes being awkward and contrary more than anything else, and he's made a bloody good living out of it over the years. At one time Peter Hitchens was a Trotskyite, and at various times has belonged to both the Labour and Conservative parties (but now belongs to neither and is critical of both). He's anti-religion, but doesn't believe in evolution. He's a snob but writes a "faux plebian" column for the UK's Sunday Mail newspaper. See what I mean? Contrary. (My opinion, BTW, and others here may have a completely different take on the man.)

Peter Hitchens is against the war, which makes him more palatable to me than his brother on that score but, basically, I find each of them as unpleasant as the other.

Edited on Thu Oct-12-06 11:48 AM by shance
They are so jealous and frightened of individuals like Governor Dean and the good that they do - Governor Dean works hard, earns what he receives, and individuals like Hichens and his narcissistic ilk are pathological takers by nature.

People like Hichens know they are frauds.

And because they know this, they project their failures and fears onto everyone else, namely those who have been contributors to the good and the hope in the world, like Governor Dean.

To vampires like Hichens, I bet Governor Dean does look like day light rising, or a stake to be driven through a heart.

another self-loathing ex-lefty who muddies his emotions with booze.

He used to be an intellectual, sadly no longer. For years now he has just been a bitter, moaning apologist for the capitalist system. Not exactly taxing for someone of his ability. It must be soul destroying trotting out trite non-sequiturs on behalf of corporate media.

It was his choice, no wonder he has retreated inside a bottle. He deserves our pity at least.

He made his "great moral choice" to be "on the right side of history" with der Chimperor. He was wrong then and now, and is too proud or thick-skulled to realize or admit it. I don't care if he drinks all day, every day, that's no excuse for willfully promoting hatred and endangering the United States by supporting a theocratic-pseudo-monarchy cheerfully otherwise known as the "unitary executive". Plenty of us, including yours truly, drink WAY too much, in my case several hours of each day, and yet don't spout off with this rabidly right-wing idiocy. If I ever start sounding like Hitchens, I assure you, the booze is most assuredly NOT to blame.

But some of us drunkards can deal with this so-called "illness", and not only function in our role as such, but even excel. Hitchens, as far as I'm concerned, doesn't have a pass on his inflammatory rhetoric because he is/was a heavy drinker.

Christopher Hitchens Forcibly Removed From Trailer Park After Drunken Confrontation With Common-Law Wife

Noted author, social critic, and political gadfly Christopher Hitchens was once again the focus of controversy Monday, when he was forcibly removed from Happy Trails trailer park following a drunken confrontation with Noreen Bodell, 39, his common-law wife of 14 years.

An inebriated Hitchens is forcibly removed from the Happy Trails trailer park.

Responding to a domestic-disturbance call, police arrived at the couple's double-wide trailer at approximately 2:15 p.m. to find Hitchens and Bodell throwing dishes at each other. When the officers attempted to remove Hitchens from the premises, the leftist intellectual became physically and verbally abusive toward the officers, calling them "shitkickers," "bitches," and "effete liberal apologists for the atrocities of late-stage capitalism."

Having consumed what sources described as "a substantial amount of single-malt scotch," Hitchens then burst into tears, yelling, "That woman never understood me for who I am. I want to talk to Lapham. Lapham's the only one who understands me."

Charged with disturbing the peace, Hitchens was taken to the Sparta police station at 3 p.m. and released four hours later.

Little is known about Bodell, a heavy-set blonde who has been known to use several different surnames. According to sources familiar with the couple, the incident marks the third time in as many weeks that police have been forced to intervene in their volatile relationship.

"We're down at the old Hitchens place probably twice a month at least," said Sgt. Wilson Vernon, the first of three officers to arrive at the scene. "Once his blood's up, old Hitch can get meaner than a three-legged coon hound. From what the neighbors told us about this latest incident, Noreen was all worked up, accusing him of drinking and womanizing. He was angry with her refusal to acknowledge that there is ample evidence to make a case for prosecuting Henry Kissinger as a war criminal. She just kept shouting, 'No, there ain't!'"

http://www.slate.com/id/2151129/nav/tap1

This is a very interesting piece, esp. the stuff about Kissinger's response to the planned invasion of Iraq. Hitchens may not be able to tell who is doing good for mankind, but he can spot a war criminal.

I elaborate more on Kissinger's divided (or maybe singular) loyalties here http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=2877643&mesg_id=2877643

Anyway, look for the Reich Wing to nail Hitchens to a cross if he keeps bad mouthing the War Criminal.
