2. He's going to play "Day After Tomorrow"
That's a great song, and very apropos for TDS. I can't wait for the commercial break to end.

6. it blows me away.....
how such a unique and unusual singing voice can bring such pathos, yet he can turn on a dime and scream in outrage. I came on board when SWORDFISHTROMBONE came out. I've been a fan ever since.

I describe his sound like that of bruce springsteen's sinister eccentric uncle uncle....the one no one talks about.

4. I know almost nothing about Tom Waits, what album is this from?
And, If you were forced to give up all of your Tom Waits albums except one, which one would you keep?

12. about mule variations
That is a really great album. (The others are, too, but I really like MV.)

The last time I saw Waits perform (well before Letterman last night) was when he was on Leno after that album came out. I was just flipping through the channels, and landed on the tonight show as Waits began to sing House Where Nobody Lives, just him and the piano. It was pretty damn incredible.

Boy, tonight was awesome. I wish they'd kept it running until he finished the song, though.

8. It's from an album called "Real Gone" that came out in '04
What a great song.

And, If you were forced to give up all of your Tom Waits albums except one, which one would you keep?

I would probably keep The Heart of Saturday Night. It's really an outstanding album of beat/folk/rock. It has one of my favorite songs (The Ghosts of Saturday Night) which has one of my favorite lines in all of rockdom, talking about the people and things that populate the late-night world: "And a solitary sailor who spends the facts of his life like small change on strangers."

So did you enjoy him on TDS?

16. I think I was typing too much to really hear the lyrics...
...plus, I'm sort of in the T.V. Production industry, so I was too busy looking at the flat, crappy T.V. studio lighting (one of the hazards of the trade), so I'll need to hear it again at 1:00am.

But thanks everyone, for all the input on which albums are the best to get first. Fortunately he doesn't have as many as Bob Dylan, another artist who, if I wasn't already heavily into, I would have trouble choosing a first album from.

9. This is from his last cd, REAL GONE.......
If I could only have one it would have to be swordfishtrombone...with frank's wild years as a follow up...maybe raindogs too...I Dunno...it's a hard one.

His sgt. pepper is probably swordfishtrombone, it's the one that changed everything. all of a sudden he was playing with antique sounds, samples, bizarre percussion, and the best songwriting since dylan (yep, that's right, I said it) check out the lyrics on shore leave or swordfishtrombone or town without cheer.

anyway, he's a legend, and long overdue for a rock and roll hall of fame induction

There are several good compilations, too.

Also, Bone Machine, swordfishtrombone... Really, the kind of artist he is, you need to have them all.

10. "Lookin' for the heart of a Saturday Night.. . ."
or 'Hold On."

For sure. Not sure about his more recent stuff.

He's an ace though. Truly.

19. Awww....we must be kindred souls...
I discovered Elliott Smith and then Jeff Buckley, and both led me to many more great singers. Yes it's sad that both are gone. I was able to see Elliott live several times (5-6?), sometimes he was amazing, sometimes he was just too high or too shy but I always loved him. Even went backstage once but didn't want to bother him. :)

After he died, I couldn't listen to his music for about a year. It still kind of hurts to hear his sadness.

In his absence, I have discovered some other greats who are still making music, like Conor Oberst, Richard Buckner, and Bonnie Prince Billy. In fact, Bonnie Prince Billy just put out one of the most beautiful albums ever made, called The Letting Go. If you don't know it, trust me, and get it. PM me if you can't afford to buy it, it's that good.

:)

21. My "saddest song" would be Phil Ochs'
"Pleasures of the Harbor" (A poor quality version is here: http://terreaga.podcastspot.com/episodes/5388D9 ) or "Flower Lady."

24. Have you ever heard the Leonard Cohen version?

John Cale also did a good version--they used it in Shrek. Buckley's version is good too. It's just a great song all the way around.

15. I just can't get past the voice
The lyrics were heart-wrenching, but he sang and it sounded like one of my funny voices -- like someone doing a bad Louis Armstrong or Cookie Monster impression.

Yeah, the lyrics were great, but the voice? Not to my taste.

20. I just listened to "Better Off Without a Wife" this weekend
It was just the background to a sort of radio comedic skit - but as I listened to Tom's lyrical and melancholy song, it reminded me of all of his other stuff.

In particular, I always liked "Small Change got rained on with his own .38" (yup, remembered it correctly)

22. The banter was great...
I'm a HUGE fan. Drove many miles to see him recently at the Ryman in Nashville. I could never pick one album, but right now Blood Money is doing it for me.

That was a perfect Daily Show for me, and it seems for John Stewart, too. He was obviously a huge fan.
