6. That may sound sensible, but it doesn't work that way |

The truth is that in conditions like these, the police actively look for someone they can beat up in order to intimidate everyone else. If it isn't a fence-kicker, they'll find some other minute impropriety to criminalize.
What happened in Zuccotti Park today was an exercise in psyops. It was the cops demonstrating that they could fence in hundreds of peaceful protesters for an extended period, not let anybody in or out, not explain what they were doing or why, give a strong impression that they were about to make mass arrests, and generally scare the shit out of everyone involved.
And having done all that, they hauled their one guy away and opened the barricades again, leaving everybody else to breathe a sign of relief, and think, "Boy, I'm glad that wasn't me. I'm be extra careful not to provoke them in the future."
Which is exactly what they want you to think.
So although I wouldn't recommend annoying the cops for no good reason, you also can't live your life in fear of annoying them inadvertently. And at times, it may be advisable to provoke them deliberately and run the risk of retaliation, simply in order to assert your own courage and keep from being paralyzed by fear.

9. They have shown they need no provocation to beat up |
|
American citizens indiscriminately. Why did they rough up a City Councilman, eg, who told them who he was, and as he said, one of the cops there knew him but did nothing to stop the arrest after which he was denied a call to his attorney for 13 hours?
Why did they pepper-spray an 86 year old woman? A pregnant woman? Or attack an Iraq Vet from behind who was doing nothing but standing there?
A woman in a wheelchair, 9 journalists who had press tags on handed out BY the NYPD?
The list is growing longer of the unprovoked attacks by thugs in robo suits against peaceful protesters.
Dragging women out of the crowds, slamming people on the ground and putting them in chokeholds.
It's a credit to the protesters that they have not become violent in response to the attacks they are enduring.
If this guy kicked a barrier, well, now THAT is a crime worthy of being attacked and bloodied! No, it is not.
But each time they do this, they make it clear that something needs to be done about our so-called 'civilian' police departments. They are now a threat to the public and reform is badly needed. I hope there will be many lawsuits, and an outside investigation of these tactics before they kill someone, which has nearly happened at least twice so far.

11. wow... he may have taken off an officer's hat |
|
but damn... he is bleeding, disoriented, distraught and will be charged with assaulting an officer. I doubt that officer had blood streaming down his/her face.
