Tomorrow there will be a firestorm of criticism against the President as the Bishops of the Netroots Purity Orthodoxy proclaim Kagan a secret member of the KKK and a reactionary jurist that doesn't pass muster because some gadfly is stuck in the marsh of perpeutal progressive angst and disappointment because getting 80% of what we want isn't nearly good enough we should be getting 150%.
Now the reason that I am depressed is because in the real world people see these attacks from the keepers of orthodoxy on the left and they frame our progressive President as being much more centrist than he is.
And I realize that the continual diet of unreasonable and unfounded attacks from the self appointed Bishops of the netroots left actually frame the President as being much more centrist than he actually is in the common perception. If he is getting attacked from both Republican Senators on the right and the gadflys on the left, regular folks think, then he must be closer to the center than he actually is.
So these unfounded and unreasonable attacks on the President actually help him. In fact these guys end up doing a much much more important service to the President than my meager contributions can ever do.
And that is depressing.

1. Some people are not happy unless they're angry, and they look for excuses to be angry. Those people were attracted to DU as a place to complain about George Bush. Well Bush isn't here anymore and someone needs to fill the void. They will grab onto any negativity.
2. The media dwells on the negative, because negative is interesting, and interesting is the most important thing, because it maximizes viewership which maximizes profit. Perspective and nuance do not maximize profit. So the media fuels the negativity.
3. This was an ugly and long primary, and some people, who didn't support Obama, are trying to justify to themselves that they backed the "right" candidate, the "real" progressive and that the people who supported Obama were duped. It was made worse because of the strong presence of identity politics in the race.

8. I've decided not to get worked up over it. There are some folks like Greenwald |
|
who hate everything Obama does and there are people who love everything Greenwald writes, without doing any research on their own. So, same as it ever was I guess.
The thing that annoys me is when writers like Greenwald pick out a tiny part of an interview and say it means this or that. I know from experience that even when you read a particular SC ruling, it can be VERY difficult to pinpoint the basis of the decision. And in those cases, you already know exactly HOW they ruled and you have it in front of you in black and white. Yet for Greenwald a simple interview leads him to judge Kagan's entire world view in terms of how she would rule as a SC Justice. There have been many Justices that you couldn't tell from one case to another how they would go, even with a substantial ruling history behind them.

15. Bloo intro'd me to a Greenwald piece from last year |
|
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=258&topic_id=6597#6632I found this Greenwald piece wonderfully written and all too true. I've been amazed and underwhelmed by the stuff he's putting out lately. It just goes to show you that the pundits can preach gospel one week and utter garbage the next.

Isn't the DLC, like, out of money? It has literally no influence in the Democratic Party anymore.
