FWIW: The TV Watch: Daytime Diplomacy
Another take on Obama's View appearance:

Daytime Diplomacy
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/30/arts/television/30watch.html?ref=barack_obama

Shows like “The View” are a way to slip past what Mr. Obama called the “media cycle,” the 24-hour cable news programs that zoom in on gaffes and inflate issues like the sliming of Shirley Sherrod. Mr. Obama tried to set the record straight, describing the firing of Ms. Sherrod on bogus accusations of racism as a “phony controversy,” and admitting that some in his administration were among the many who “overreacted.”

Mr. Obama told his hosts that “the media culture right now loves conflict.” But right then the media culture on “The View” mostly loved Mr. Obama. Joy Behar, who is the show’s designated liberal, asked the president why he didn’t have better attack dogs to combat right-wing smears. “Joy, that’s your job,” Mr. Obama said with a smile.

Even Elisabeth Hasselbeck, a conservative, was admiring and deferential. She tried to challenge him on unemployment, saying that the administrations figures about “saved jobs” wasn’t the same as creating new ones. Mr. Obama pushed her back handily and politely, noting, “It makes a difference if your job was one of the ones that were saved.”

Mr. Obama may be the first sitting president to appear on a daytime talk show, but he would undoubtedly do more of it were it not for the risk of wearing out his welcome. The law of diminishing returns applies to talk-show appearances as well — more is less.

1. It's worth
a lot! In your face tone deaf, ed rendell.

<snip>

"Pennsylvania Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell advised President Barack Obama against appearing later this week on “The View,” encouraging the president to only do “serious shows.”

“I think the president should be accessible, should answer questions that aren't pre-screened, but I think there should be a little bit of dignity to the presidency,” Rendell said during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

The daytime talk show announced Monday that Obama will be taping an interview with the four female hosts that will air Thursday. Obama last appeared on the program during the presidential election. Vice President Joe Biden was on “The View” in April.

Rendell said the talk show did not have the required stature to host the president, comparing “The View” to “The Jerry Springer Show,” which frequently devolves into onstage brawls.

“I wouldn't put him on Jerry Springer either,” Rendell said. “It is different a little bit. But I think the president of the United States has to go on serious shows.”

Rumor has it that rendell wanted to go on The View but was rejected..but I'm not linking to the ny post.

And, Jon Stewart fixed all those faux handwringers.

5. Still can't figure out why so many Democrats are eager to go on that show.
Guess it boils down to one thing: ratings.

(Although, to be fair to Rendell, I think he has all in all been very supportive of Obama. I guess in this case, it may also be a version of old school vs. new school.)

4. Look how worried they get that he might be around too much!
Overexposed and all that jazz. They know that when people see him, they are persuaded and his ratings go up. so they try to "warn" him not to get overexposed.
