House cuts off war funding
Source: True Majority

Dear Paul,

I wanted to share some breaking news. The House of Representatives just voted 149 to 141 to cut off funding for the war in Iraq.

This was followed by votes to put significant restrictions on President Bush's war policy, including a timeline for withdrawal, and creating a new GI Bill to help returning veterans.1

Make no mistake, your efforts were a key factor in this decision. In the past two weeks, you placed over 2,300 calls to House members in targeted districts, demanding they bring a responsible end to the war and then calling for the exact vote result that happened today.

This is the strongest vote by the House since the war began in opposition to the President's war.

But, this is just the first step.

Contribute $35 right now to increase the pressure to bring the troops home:

1. More Here.......
US House rejects war funding bill

The White House wants funds to pay for another year of war
The Democrat-controlled US House of Representatives has rejected more funding to pay for another year of fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The bill would have provided the Pentagon with $162.5bn (£83.5bn) to keep the two wars going but included add-ons wanted by the Democrats.

Republicans withheld their votes in protest, allowing the war funding bill to be defeated by 149-141.

The Senate is expected to debate its version of the bill next week.

The House did pass two components of the bill that call for extended education benefits for returning soldiers and for President George W Bush to begin withdrawing troops from Iraq within 30 days of the bill becoming law.

President Bush had earlier promised to veto any measures that restricted his actions in Iraq.

Campaign promises

House Republicans withheld their votes from the bill, saying the Democrats had added unrelated domestic-spending provisions that would delay getting funding to the troops.

"We're playing political games on the backs of our troops - you know it," said Republican Minority Leader John Boehner.

The war funding issue will be raised again next week, when the Senate is expected to debate its version of the bill.

16. Well its a good thing I was not drinking anything
when I read what John Boehner said or I would have ended up spraying it all over, that guy is such a tool to try that when the republicans have been playing politics with the troops these past few years.
When is Boehner up for re-election anyway, maybe we can get a democrat to replace him if its soon by using those words against him.

Some people use the LBN rss feed and won't see it if it's only in GD.
Some people don't read GD, they just look at LBN and their favorite topic forums.
LBN is very important!

6. Of all the articles on this subject, this is the one which I like best
House cuts off war funding.

Has a nice ring to it. Even better would be 'Congress cuts off war funding', but Harry Reid will never take such a principled stance in the Senate.

7. If asked why, the house should respond by saying they were inspired by Bush's
willingness to give up golf for the war and they decided to give up the war for the war. I'm thrilled. I hope this sticks.

12. It's about time they did something. They have an approval rating worse than Bush's!
And I've begun to think their elections were about as legitimate. Same "trade secret" code vote counting, owned and controlled by rightwing Bushite corporations. Same lack of audits/recounts. A few improvements here and there, and backsliding. Why are they protecting the profits of Bushite corps who are using "trade secret" code to 'count' all our votes and who claimed, in FL-13, that their "right" to profit from our elections trumps the right of the voters to know how their votes were counted? Why would anybody defend these corporate fuckwads and want to give them billions MORE of our tax dollars to "fix" the horrors in our election system that they deliberately created and lavishly lobbied for?

It's a puzzle. And, just in time--before a few other people begin to wonder, too--our supposed Democratic Congress starts acting like they were elected by the people.

I'm glad, you know, that the House voted against war funding. Don't get me wrong. It's a hopeful sign of the times. I just feel so...had.
