Other than the work option , which everyone here makes you feel bad for utilizing ,makes you feel like you are stealing jobs from natural born citizens, without thinking that there are no other immigration options open, Unless you get into a sham marriage which I will never do.

1. Sorry for the rant , I am applying for my green card and just frustrated that being someone who
obeyed all the rules , I still have to jump through all the hoops put forth by DHS.

6. I am originally from Jordan , I got my Ph.d in the US.
I already applied for the Green Card ... through the work option , I was just frustrated that many here on DU berate that option as stealing American Jobs , while it is the only immigration option available for those not related to US citizens

9. At the Ph.D. level, you're not competing with all the many Americans....
Go for it any way you legally can.

What field is your degree in, by the way?

11. Nice. We need you. Fuck what the nativists say. Get a job here - lots of nice people..
in the larger cities, and communities of all sorts of people there that are just fine with immigrants.

12. I am afraid my reasons for wanting to stay in the US are rather selfish , I can never return home
due to personal reasons , and my desire to stay in the US is not to benefit the country.

Maybe I can try applying for asylum , but my lawyer says the chances of approving that are slim . I guess I will have to hope that my permanent status will be approved in the end .

I am tired of only getting temporary Visa extensions.

One of my friends offered to marry her and get this over with , but as much as I want to be citizen , I can never do such a dishonest thing. Maybe as a last resort I will have too.

aren't about benefiting the country.

do you have a job here ? if so, can you get your employer to help you out ?

16. Jobs are not the problem , I have a job , and I do consulting with multiple companies
Edited on Mon Aug-17-09 03:23 AM by UndertheOcean
The problem is the uncertainty that hangs over my head due to the possibility of having a renewal refused by DHS just like that . Hopefully this year is the magic one , the year I finally get my permanent status.

My company applied for the green card, and is more than willing to help , the problem is the bureaucracy of the US immigration system.

The legal road is really hard and long winded . I have been going at it for 7 years. 5 years as a student .

No wonder many choose the illegal route.

14. (shrug) Hard to be any more selfish that those of us born here....
At least you have significant skills to contribute, whether or not that's stated goal.

Nothing wrong with wanting a better life for you and yours - and working hard for it.

Like I said originally: good luck.

21. Ugh. Jordan is problematic for immigrants :(
My girlfriend is over there right now and everyone she meets wants to come over here.

If you're of Palestinian descent there are a few aid societies that can help you relocate to France, from where it is easier to get into the citizen lottery; if you're hashemite there's unfortunately not much chance other than the general worldwide lottery.

As you probably know, the US is shedding EE jobs like it's cool (that's my field too) so there will be significant opposition to the next round of H1B's having many EE positions in them (I sympathize with your situation, but I've got to work too, you know?)

Also, be careful with work visas; way too many companies feel like they'll have you over a barrel and will overwork and underpay you and then throw you out when the contract is done.

Wish I had better news for you. Betawfeeq!

7. well put it this way
it took my sister's partner 12 years to get a green card from the UK, despite having a natural born US Citizen brother sponsoring her, having spent a decade living in the US as a child and a general as a father. it's not easy at all. good luck.

8. I know , that is why it is very frustrating. one feels like almost giving up .
One feels that is the intention of the INS , to encourage you to just give up because of the bureaucracy

17. Don't give up.
I feel great empathy for you as I have a similar situation. Whatever you do, continue to be honest, and try not to think about those who cheat to get in.

Good luck! :hi:

I know many Moroccans and Mauritanians here who won the lottery, but the lottery is available to certain countries.

20. hopefully not too far off-point:

i.m.h.o., everyone shd be able to move/live wherever the heck they want. Restrictions on our movements benefit no one other than our feudal lords/oligarchs who would prefer that we serfs be tied to lands, but only when to the benefit of said lords/oligarchs.

Immigrants shdn't necessarily, immediately inherit benefits they didn't help pay for; but that's a separate issue, easily dealt with, except that said lords/oligarchs use it to confuse us.

22. Be rich.
Apparently rich people can live wherever they want, regardless of immigration rules anywhere.

Of course rules never seem to apply to rich people at all.
