1. wow...what a short life...
i think we all should look at what we do and realize we ain't going to be around forever, sorry for the familie's loss. i just found out my cousin died this morning from Cancer, and it was because she was on welfare and hadn't had any healthcare in years.

5. actually people on welfare always have health care
people on the federal TANF program get medicaid coupons. the people most excluded from health care are those who work at the myriad of poorly paid jobs that exist today.

7. Actually no, they don't "always" get it.
You can get welfare, Medicaid, and Food Stamps for your KIDS and not yourself. This is far more common now than it used to be, as some states have tightened the eligibility restrictions for adults in the post-1996 reform era. It's easy for kids to qualify. It's damned hard for an adult to qualify.

14. there are medical programs for families with children
and you are right, the children can be the only ones who receive the medical when it is medical only program. and people who receive food stamps don't necessarily get medical or cash public assistance. but adults who receive cash public assistance also have access to medical assistance. it is integral in the federal TANF program; the TANF program is the current Aid to Families With Dependent Children or welfare program. You said your sister was on welfare and my comment was focused on that. it is correct that basic food assistance doesn't offer medical.

But my main point was to identify those most excluded from access to health care are those who work but are paid too little money to cover their basic needs like housing and food with enough left over to purchase health insurance (which is not access to health care necessarily). i am a long term advocate of single payer health care.

17. Yes, but adults do not always receive TANF for themselves.
They can get checks for JUST their children. When these cases are decided, each household member is listed and it is decidedly separately whether or not that person qualifies for benefits. In a four-person family (Mom and three kids) the kids might all qualify for TANF (and thus, Medicaid) while Mom does not. In that circumstance, she'd get cash and medical benefits for the kids, but not for herself.

Reasons that a Mom might not qualify include failure to provide all necessary documentation for herself (for example, if she has all her kids' birth certificates but not her own), sanction because she broke a rule, or because there's something about her particular living circumstances that disqualifies HER but not her kids.

Recipients of TANF are indeed ALWAYS guaranteed Medicaid. However, you can't assume that a woman receiving a TANF check is necessarily a TANF recipient herself. If her kids qualify for TANF and she does not, then she won't automatically receive Medicaid when she gets the check for the kids, although her kids (as recipients) will.

6. This happened to my one of my Mom's close friends three years ago.
She fell down a flight of stairs and died from hitting her head. It just is such a sad way to go out. RIP Mr. Coleman.

9. Wow...too young.
I got an email from the nephew of a friend. Her huband passed away yesterday of a massive heart attack. Only 44 years old. Somehow, I feel ancient today. I am 61 and I look back at my early and mid 40s now and realize I was just a kid.

RIP...
