Cate told Elizabeth she is engaged to be married just days before Elizabeth learned that her cancer treatments would no longer work. Hopefully that gave Elizabeth joy to know her daughter had found her partner in life.

If you are 28 when your Mom dies, you usually do not have a 10 & 12 yr old brother and sister. Most 28 yr olds are eagerly planning out their independent lives, falling in love, starting careers, sowing some wild oats, and being a bit selfish before they settle down to start their families.
Kate's life is now going to have to be different, because she will be the one to finish raising her siblings. I'm sure they will still feel an attachment to their Dad, but the family dynamics being what they "are", will probably bind them to her, more than to him.
The family life she has ahead of her will be very different from what she probably imagined, and a man who will come along for her will have to accept the "instant family"...of young teens ...and that can be a lot to handle.
At least Elizabeth had a few years to prepare her, but it's going to be a vastly different life than they all imagined for her.
Hopefully there will be enough money for her to accomplish it all. Her Dad's "earning power" is probably greatly diminished these days, and that humongous house in the woods may not be the "home" it was intended to be , and may be hard to sell.. Sometimes, the place where a beloved family member died, is not the place they want to live in forever.
My grandfather dropped dead at the kitchen sink (a stroke), and every day when my Mother was doing dishes, she remembered that her Dad had died in the very spot she was standing:(

She told her Mom over Thanksgiving. Elizabeth is said to have been thrilled.
