The potential is certainly there. But is the will? Or even the understanding that war has been declared?
Not yet. If the PTB had their way, not ever. But what is going on here cannot continue. Eventually the entire country will be looted of all portable and tangible wealth, and then the violence will start.
The sooner, the more like we are to hang onto a shred of the country and its founding principles.
The most troubling aspect is how many born and bred Americans seem willing to betray everything this country is, for some Madison Avenue/GOP/religious whacko parody. Worse yet, how many truly ignorant people are spooked by the fearmongers.

need to be Beck, Hannity, and Limpballs. Start local - you probably have a neighborhood wannabe.

2. There's plenty of dissent out there |
|
but so far no true populist leader has been willing to step forward and call on people to do what is necessary.
What is necessary are things like a general boycott or rolling boycotts targeted at specific sectors.
Also, I'd like to see all political contributions diverted to organizations like Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. This is what I've done with my "charitable" giving.
We need to send a message that the people ultimately control production and consumption, and through that control we control the economy, and through the economy we control the government.
I hear that the top 2% has as much wealth as the bottom 98%. Well, the bottom 98% can carry a lot more pitchforks.

3. agreed -- all that's necessary is that all the 'different' special left leaning interest groups |
|
from animal rights people to unions{enough of them} come under an over arching umbrella - one that has an economic justice heart.
people will have to put that first -- then their interests second. -- it can be done.
then maybe we don't need a populist leader -- although it would be nice to have a couple of well spoken charismatic folks out in front.

8. Yes, a formal "leader" isn't necessary if people create organizations |
|
organized around a set of principles. This example may upset people, but Al Qaeda is so successful because it's an idea--a set of principles around which people act independently for a common purpose and goal.
Such organizations are resiliant because there is no head to cut off.
Liberal populists need to organize along the same lines. We don't need a majority of Americans to have an effect. Imagine the impact on the economy, and the message that would be sent, if only 10% or 20% of the population stopped nonessential spending for six months--no iPods, no dinner out, no new appliances, no new cars, no vacations...
Initially, a few people with influence would be needed to get the ideas out there, but they would become unnecessary once the ideas gel.
The efficient things about such organizations is that they have no infrastructure to support, so they need no donations, and they have no membership rosters to use for witch hunts. If you believe in the principles, you are a member.

I just don't see that happening. Wish it would, but I think we're a very divided country- and not just divided into two sides, but into many factions that just don't seem to be able to come together.

7. This Is What I Like About DU |

An incipient right wing movement has nearly take over the nation and now America, presumably under the left, can come together.
Maybe if I click my heels three times I will be back in Kansas.
