Anyone familier with this site? Women on Waves
http://www.womenonwaves.org/index.php

They seem to have intermittent press releases, but an in your face site. On the facts page there is a picture of a woman is used who died from an illegal abortion. There was a thread in GD started by that woman's daughter a while back, one of the most powerful things I've every read on DU.

1. Wow--you read my mind!
I was thinking (and wondering) about this the last few days. But I couldn't remember what it was called, or how to find it. I'm SO glad you posted this! These women are so brave and quite special to initiate this! My she-ro's! ;)

Thanks again for posting!

2. Thank you for posting this link. I was reading through the letters and this one has me in tears.
http://www.womenonwaves.org/article-1020.284-en.html

" I am 3 months pregnant, have no food for tomorrow for my 2 other kids. I want an abortion, but do not have the 1000 zlotys needed (approximately 250euros ). I am very poor, from a small village where nobody knows about my pregnancy, I am afraid of my husband's reaction. I has been jumping from the furniture to cause miscarriage. I beg you for help."

3. fuck Poland and Ireland
The Irish at least are relatively prosperous and can make a weekend trip to England.

Polish women are now suffering under the double heel of poverty and oppression, with the advent of ... excuse me while I puke ... "democracy".

I hardly need add: fuck the Roman Catholic Church.

And yeah, a couple of my best friends are RC. Just like I have some USAmerican friends ...

5. I know a few RC's
that have denounced their faith to the church. They were sickened by their support for *, and by the attack on women and women's rights. They've eiter joined other churches/faiths they consider more supportive or are flying solo now.

4. this one kinda does me
"We have a problem that we cannot solve by ourselves. My girlfriend is in the 3rd week of pregnancy. We are young and I don?t know what to do, could you help me? How much does the help cost and could you tell me if its dangerous for the health of my girlfriend. Could she become infertile? I read on your website about the possibility of severe pain and the painkiller. What kind of medicine is that? Is it efficient and safe? Please respond quickly."

What a decent young man he seems.

The book I sometimes recommend, The Choices We Made, is inspirational in that it reminds the reader of the world of ordinary women, all the millions and billions of us and all our ordinary and yet singular lives, our lives, and all the choices we all have to make, and how absolutely and singularly competent we are to make them.

Ordinary people, in all their shapes and sizes. And sexes. ;)

I swear it to you, I swear it on my common woman's head,
a common woman is as common as a common loaf of bread
... and will RISE!

(I finally found an old post on a board somewhere from someone who'd had the same version of the ditty as I had, 35 years ago. ;) )
