Can't find any website that discusses, rates and prices central air conditioning units |
|
You are at the complete mercy of your local heating and cooling contractors. Obviously, you should get multiple estimates, but it seems like you should be able to somehow get a ballpark handle handle on what is reasonable versus exorbitant pricing.
We need to get a 3ton split system replaced, using existing duct work, etc. I have 2 quotes that are miles apart. I don't know if one is too good to be true or if the other one is a complete gouge.
I have checked Consumer reports - they don't rate or have price info on central air. If you look at Lowes and Home Depot they just have forms to fill out for a contractor to call you. The manufacturer sites have no priceing info. This industry has a a heavy veil of secrecy.

I replaced my heat and air system a couple of years ago. Installed a high efficiency (~95%) gas furnace and an 18 seer central air conditioning unit. The duct work was left intact but an additional return was added. So was a programable thermostat. The system also included a filter system that better enables me to remove allergens (could have surgical quality air if I installed the appropriate filter!). Some carpentry work was required to remove the old system. I paid $8000 which included all the labor, a one year service contract and a ten year warranty on parts. Labor continues to be warrantied for that ten year period as long as I maintain that service contract. I got a Lennox system. At the time I did quite a bit of research and found that American Standard was generally considered the best brand with Lennox also highly rated. I've been pretty happy with the system I chose to install. I did find several reviews online when doing my research.
Good luck.
