epinions -- What happened?

I used to go to www.epinions.com whenever I wanted to read reviews but the last few times I checked it, it seemed out-of-date and less active. These days, I use amazon.com to get user product reviews, even if I don't order from them.

What are other good sites to find out what people really think of a product or a company?

1. If you are in the Washington DC area by any chance,

go to www.checkbook.org. You have to join as a member, but costs are reasonable. The site should also indicate whether the service is available where you are. It is like Consumer Reports, but for local services.

Another service like this is Angie's List.

Both have been good, in my experience.
