"A rose by any other name would smell as sweet." (From Shakespeare's
Romeo and Juliet, 1594)

In this part of the planet, one the first signs of spring approaching
are those hardy flowering bulbs pushing their foliage through the cold
ground and producing yellow flowers. I've called these early flowers
jonquils for as long as I can remember. However, there is an ongoing
discussion with friends about the name. Are they jonquils, daffodils or
narcissus? Rather than getting technical in this space, Laurel Kane has
pretty much done the research and tells us here:

All-in-all, I assume that what really matters is what something is, not
what it is called.

CRANK IT UP

An early 1900's Wurlitzer organ made for large merry-go-rounds is one of
the vintage musical instruments on display at Dr. Ted's Musical Marvels
Museum in Dale, Indiana. Player pianos, street organs, nickelodeons and
music boxes from the 1800's to the mid-1900's embodies this huge
collection. Many of the instruments can be seen (and heard) on the
website.

TOOTHPASTE COLLECTING

A Michigan dentist devotes much of his time covering the wide world of
toothpaste. He started his toothpaste collection in March 2002 and you
can now view nearly 1407 items at the website. Who knew that characters
such as Woody Woodpecker, the Care Bears, and Hopalong Cassidy have lent
their names to the cause of top-quality teeth? How about a six-proof
Scotch whiskey toothpaste?

FREE IS GOOD

In this recessionary economy anything free sounds pretty good. Did you
know that there is no admission fee at the Indianapolis Museum of Art,
one of the top art museums in the country?

HANKER FOR A HARLEY?
http://www.h-dmuseum.com

No other motorcycle can lay claim to the distinguishable guttural roar
of a Harley-Davidson. Harley lovers can now find a collection of 450
H-D's at the new Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, the bike's
birthplace. The museum displays a range of motorcycles including 1903's
Serial Number One, Elvis Presley's 1956 KH and King Kong, a bike
customized over 40 years that is 13 feet long and boasts two engines. If
you can't make a visit in person, take a virtual tour and visit the
online exhibits section of the website. Enjoy the ride!

POLITICAL MEMORABILIA PRICES

The 2008 elections generated much interest in political-related
collecting. Our friend, Barb Crews, Collectibles Guide over at
about.com, assembled some photos and prices of presidential memorabilia
sold at auction. A John F. Kennedy inaugural pennant realized $61 and an
Eisenhower/Nixon button brought over $1000. Check out the above link for
a sampling of more items.

SPORTS MEMORABILIA

In a tough economy, quality sports collectibles are still a good value
according to Forbes Magazine. They say that a signed piece of sports
gear in good condition is a pure asset, with no underlying profit and
loss statement to swing its value. Read the article at the above link.

TIME AND TIME AGAIN

View past covers of Time from 1923 to the present. Search by keyword or
year. You can even search for your birthday cover. It's fun! Some
framable reprints are available for purchase.

SALE OF THE CENTURY
http://christies.com

The artwork that inspired late fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent was
auctioned by Christies last week in Paris. Billed as "the sale of the
century," the auction of the 733-piece collection dispersed in three
days a collection that took Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Berge
half a century to amass. The top lot of the sale was Les coucous, tapis
bleu et rose, 1911 by Henri Matisse, which sold for $46.4 million. The
historic sale set a world record for the most valuable private
collection sold at auction and realized $483,835,144. The proceeds of
the sale will go to the Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent Foundation,
created to prolong the history of the House of Yves Saint Laurent, and
to a new foundation that will be set up for scientific research and the
fight against AIDS. Saint Laurent died last year at 71 after a yearlong
battle with brain cancer.
