A Senator Takes Office, Departure Already in Sight

By RITA K. FARRELL
Published: January 29, 2009

WILMINGTON, Del. — In the twilight of his career, Edward E. Kaufman has returned to Washington.

In 1976, Mr. Kaufman began 19 years as chief of staff to Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr. of Delaware. He left to become a campaign consultant and a member of the federal Broadcasting Board of Governors, and to continue teaching Duke University law students about Congress.

Now, at age 69, he is back as a newly minted Democratic senator, formally appointed on Jan. 15 by the departing governor, Ruth Ann Minner, to fill the seat vacated by Vice President Biden.

2. Biden is really lucky that this was done before the subject of governor appointments
blew up.

In fact, Russ Feingold is suppose to be proposing legislation that says no more appointments, there needs to be a special election.

3. I think there should be a temporary appointment and an election a few months later
or something like that - but not waiting 20+ months for a special election.

4. I think Russ' idea is a good one - but it's not going to fly.
Elections cost money, and I don't know of any states that have any money these days.

They are slashing the education budget here. Protests have been going on all week.
Welcome to our new governor...I lost it when I called her office :P I think I let all my frustration out about her taking Napolitano's place on her answering machine. Therapuetic for me, not so sure about the person who had to listen....

5. This is sort of an unusual case, isn't it? Aren't there
more people in Chicago alone bidding for that seat than there are people in all of Delaware? :P Well, it must be pretty close anyway. ;-)

6. Well if not in Chicago, definitely in New York.
How many people wanted that seat? I lost count.
