1. Neither did Teddy Kennedy but not having experienced
yourself is not an excuse for having no empathy. It's not their lack of experience it's their lack of a heart. :-(

2. It's not necessary that someone have been in that situation to understand we who are. . .
it requires empathy, and more than that, a willingness to be empathetic. Without that as their guiding principle, doesn't matter how poor they may have been in the past, or how much their parents, siblings or friends may have suffered over the years.

FDR never worried about a hospital stay, nor did JFK.

4. This was true of the Democrats in 2000, 2004, and 2008
None of them IN THEIR ADULT LIVES had that problem. That is why it is a poor question. Based on background alone - there is no difference between the well off FDR and the well off Romney. That is why the question should be what they supported over a long time.

If you don't specify adult life, it is likely Bachmann was poorer that the "son of a millworker".

The difference is that virtually all Democrats can have empathy for people making those decisions. You could see it in their faces when they spoke to people going through just that - and their consistency in fighting for the poor. Some of the wealthiest have been the most consistent.

Watching the debate, one of the one interesting comments to me was Ron Paul saying that as everyone swore an oath to uphold the constitution - there should be no discord in Congress and it clearly frustrated him. To me, it showed how closed minded he is - he can't see the possibility that others interpret it differently - just as Republicans read the same Bible as most Democrats, but get totally different messages.
