I am not going to comment on what happened tonight
except to say that I do not want to hear any more Obama bashing on DU. I'm sure I will, but I am simply not going to deal with it any longer.

President Obama needs all of our support. This is a crisis situation, and if we cannot support him in this crisis, we fail miserably.

So, for those who continue to post nothing but negative statements regarding the President, all you will accomplish will be to earn my contempt and the contempt of all who want to find a solution for the situation and avoid our default on our obligations. I'm not going to argue with you. I'm not even going to acknowledge that you have posted yet more attacks on the Democratic President of The United States.

Some may find that to be a good thing. It is not. Until this debt limit issue is solved, we have a serious need to support President Obama. Once it is solved, there will be ample time to attack him on other grounds if that's your bent. But not now. Not at this moment.

I call for solidarity in support of the man we elected to be President. If we cannot muster that, then we fail.

That is all.

17. There are DAYS left for the R's to try to hype crisis to their advantage...
They will agree to the debt ceiling limit with seconds, if not minutes to spare.

This is brinksmanship frome the R's, a sense of crisis and impending doom is proper posturing to get more concessions for the conservatives.

35. Just my frustration
I wish for several things.

Downsize the military
Get rid of the tax cuts on the wealthy
Close the corporate loopholes like GE had

But, we are talking about another plan, not a Democratic plan. we are negotiating from a defensive posture.

Those plans include

No tax increase
Reduction in SS and Medicare

sigh.

But if playing defense in a nice sounding voice makes sense and makes ya all feel good fine.

75. Obama is willing to make Pentagon cuts (don't know how that
was met by the Repubs, though), and we're not sure WHAT reductions on SS and Medicare he had on the table.

So what would you do if you were in his place? You know it's essential we don't default, you need votes from both sides, they're not playing ball.

What would you do?

And, he obviously didn't give them all they wanted otherwise they wouldn't have walked. Maybe you're underestimating him?

And I have to say I will support the president for reelection in 2012.

However until I hear that he has awakened to the realities that he is trying to deal with people who don't want to deal, and decided to take positive action on his own to resolve what in fact may be a made up crisis I'm going to question his efficacy.

I'm glad that he's unhappy that his enemies didn't accept his latest offer, but it was a crappy offer. Hopefully he'll do the right thing and quit trying to placate people who hate is guts.

Edited on Fri Jul-22-11 07:02 PM by Forkboy
There is still no deal, so any victory celebrations are as premature as the complaints you're complaining about, no?

As for your contempt, you've been making that clear to people for a long time, whether you realize it or not. It shines through in many of your posts already, so what would be new? I doubt many are going to be too devastated that their not a part of your reindeer games.

And as I said elsewhere, in a democracy the citizens should be perpetual gadflies. Now is ALWAYS the time to speak out. If we cannot muster that, we fail.

78. Agree. I'll congratulate when SS and Medicare and
Medicaid is safe from Republicans AND Democrats.

Wall Street wants the debt ceiling raised, so it will be raised. Now, they ALSO want to get their hands on OUR Social Security money too, so they backed the bluff for a while. But they've already started folding. And there's enough corporate Dems and Republicans together to do Wall Street's bidding and just raise the debt ceiling. The rest of this shit is just Kabuki Theater.

Regardless, if OUR working class social programs are safe for a while, that'll be enough to breathe a sigh of relief. For now.

It must suck for these people that we see right through them. That they have fooled NO ONE, except possibly themselves.

could scarcely be worse, more intransigent, and generally unwilling to do anything on behalf of this country, if it does not further their own personal agenda. I have my occasional qualms with Obama, but there could scarcely be anyone who, in his place, could deal more effectively with this crowd of assholes. On that, I am pretty convinced.

I hope he has a long term strategy going. While I'm agnostic on most things spiritual, on that I simply will have to have faith.

My frustration runneth over, but I do not lose focus on who deserves the blame. It surely isn't President Obama. He has me in his corner as long as he continues to protect those who are truly hurting.

I can shut nothing down. When will you realize that? I can only post my opinion. What's your point, really? If I can't shut down the discussion, then where's the issue? I simply said I wouldn't acknowledge any further attacks on the President until this crisis is over. I have no power to make you do or not do anything, nor would I if I could. I can, however, refuse to acknowledge you when you bash the President, and I will. Post on.

Trust me, those of us that fought hard to get Pres Obama elected want very badly to support him. For you to insinuate otherwise isnt conducive to solidarity. In fact, it's divisive.

I guess the difference between groups here in DU is the amount of abuse one is willing to take at the hands of the Republicans. I, speaking for myself, am fed up and want to stop giving the farm away. The lesser of evils is chipping away at Democratic principles.

You cant compromise with blackmailers, terrorists and Republicans.

it gets harder to defend him...as he's done a blitz against his fellow Democrats with Speeches, Press Conferences and now the Town Hall ..where he Blitzes us about how we have to "Sacrifice, Eat our Peas and realize that we brought this on ourselves by racking up all this debt we've done...and now Wall Street is telling us ...We "Consumers" must STOP our WASTEFUL WAYS or AMERICA WILL NOT SURVIVE!

Throw the Oldies UNDER THE BUS...They are sucking everything out of America with their health care needs and their other "ENTITLEMENT/WELFARE" payouts...that are in danger of cutting out Student Loans, Corporate Investment in Small Businesses and not helping the Banking Industry because they are too reluctant to put their money in the Stock Market after the Dot Com Booom/Bust...Housing Implosion and the Melt Down of '08-09...and they really need to understand that "AMERICAN BUSINESS NEEDS THEIR MONEY!" If you don't GIVE US YOUR MONEY the WHOLE AMERICAN SYSTEM IS IN DANGER OF DEFAULT!

:wow: He's laid a lot on our plates for us to swallow...hasn't he?

107. "I am not going to comment on what happened tonight"
Kind of defeats the purpose of a political discussion board.

The rest of your OP is focused on discussing other DU members --also contrary to the spirit of the DU rules.

A call for everyone to bite their tongues on a discussion board is not the same as a call for solidarity. It is worse because it tries to weaken people's freedom of expression while making no attempt to change their underlying beliefs or understanding of the situation.

If we'd turn a blind-eye to Democratic ideals to support an individual, we're rooting for laundry and likewise we fail.

besides the one where a democratically elected Democratic president fails to do what we elected him to do?

148. I am calling for solidarity for sticking up for Democratic principles, and not the label.

152. I'll support him alright...
Just like I did my lousy blue dog representative Mike Ross for about the first year or so after he was elected. I was so hoping to see him do something that showed he was promoting Democratic values and was not wearing the "D" behind his name ostensibly. Unfortunately, as time progressed and he became even more ensconced in the Washington/Legislator lifestyle and persona, it finally became apparent that he was ANYTHING BUT a Democrat. That's when the man totally lost my support... I refused to even vote for him on at least 5 occasions.

The general election in 2010 was the first time I broke that trend and I did vote for him, but only because the situation was so critical. It was so important that we at least try to prevail with an overall majority caucus in the House, but even that failed. Nonetheless, I rallied around the sorry bastard, held my nose, and supported him. I am just tickled me pink, though, that he is not running again. Hallelujah!! In this same vein and manner, I will support Obama through this crisis (even despite the fact that it is an artificial crisis). Nonetheless, it is, as you say quite important that we do not default on the debt limit.

As I just stated, I am also willing to rally behind President Obama in a time of crisis and will certainly support him in any effort he makes against the rabid right-wing Rethugs. However, over the past 2 years he has proven time and again that his real constituency is mainly the rich banksters and corporateers... and NOT WE THE PEOPLE!!!

Now, I just have one question. If Obama finally delivers the "coup de grace" (not gras, by the way, which means "fat" in French), and makes it quite clear that he is really more Republican than Democrat, will you actually concede the point, or do you have so much invested in being an "Obama adherent" that to admit he is not what he claims to be, you just could not afford to lose face by admitting such?

157. I will support Obama as soon as he takes this shit off the table for now

I'm not going along with the Shock Docturne aporoach that we should put ourselves into a GOP made straightjacket for the long term, to solve a phony short term manufactured crisis.

There is more than enough time to hash over long term budget priorities and taxes and possible cuts.

But the only really Adult thing Obama should do now is to tell the GOP to stop blackmailing the country and pass the fucking debt ceiling now, with no conditions.

HE can talk about compromise after that.

WHEN HE DOES THAT HE WILL HAVE MY FULL SUPPORT.
