Thanksgiving, Black Friday and then Shop Small Saturday. |
|
No sooner do workers get themselves a four day weekend than retailers claim two of the four days.
But, I like the idea of shopping small (and local). Because shopping local takes less fuel, they should call it "Green Saturday."
Anyway, it's a day for staying out of chain stores and big box stores and visiting a small business store in your neighborhood. There are not many left in my neighborhood.

1. It's sad to see Mom and Pop stores close |

I don't go into Town more than a couple of times a Month, so, any changes that occur seem to stand out more. Some shops, like the Video Rental and the Photo Store were pretty much a victim of technological progress, but many others were due to the new Wally-World Super Store. There was even a new Lowes home improvement Big-Box that bit the dust from the Housing Collapse, competition from an established Home Depot and a not so good choice of location. Sears won't last long, now that they're in bed with Bain Capital. Between that and Wally World, they're toast.

2. People once bought decent homes out of the Sears catalog. |

Another institution that may disappear.
I hope Lands End survives, though.
Sears acquired LE some time ago.
Since then, the quality has gone down some, but still good value, especially if on sale.
