ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Two top officials of the extreme-right Golden Dawn party were arrested Saturday on charges of forming a criminal organization, marking the first time since 1974 that sitting members of Parliament have been arrested.

In a text message to journalists, police announced the arrests of party leader Nikos Michaloliakos and spokesman Ilias Kassidiaris.

Two police officials said an operation by the counterterrorism unit is still ongoing, with warrants for "3 or 4 other" Golden Dawn deputies still pending. A total of about 35 arrest warrants for Golden Dawn members have been issued, they said.

They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not permitted to speak publicly.

The arrests have come 11 days after the killing of a left-wing activist rapper by an alleged Golden Dawn member. Though the party has vehemently denied any role in the killing, it has appeared to dent its appeal among Greeks and the government has worked to crack down on the party.

We'd have to rely on Holder for the arrests.

1. I applaud the Greeks for this.

Stomp out this vermin before the people, in their desperation, are fooled by flowery words. We have seen this playbook before.

2. The Ancient Greeks had a word for it.

Then again, they had a word for almost everything that they knew about at that time. Still do.

I applaud the Greek police, but I await the outcome to see what ultimately comes of this. (I grew up in New Jersey, moved to Manhattan and now live in Boston. Need I say more about my reserving judgment until they're either in jail or back on the job?)

BTW, I hope it was clear that the last line of the OP was snark.

If the charge is murder or some kind of criminal conspiracy, local cops and the local DA would be in charge, at least initially, not Holder. However, I do somehow have a feeling that the whole thing would not be handled straightforwardly if members of Congress were involved.
